Armenistis Lighthouse: A Must-Visit in Mykonos

Perched atop Armenistis Hill, Armenistis Lighthouse stands as a beacon of natural beauty, captivating visitors with its imposing presence and breathtaking views. Built in 1890, the lighthouse has become an iconic landmark of Mykonos, offering panoramic vistas that encompass the entire island, neighboring islands, and the vast expanse of the Aegean Sea.

The ascent to the lighthouse is a scenic hiking experience in itself, following trails that weave through the Cycladic landscape, immersing visitors in the island's vibrant colors and fragrant aromas. Reaching the summit, the reward is plentiful - the views from above are simply mesmerizing, especially during sunset when the sky transforms into a canvas of fiery hues, creating a masterpiece of natural beauty.

Apart from the panoramic vistas, Armenistis Lighthouse is worth exploring for its simple, Cycladic architecture, harmoniously blending into the surroundings and whispering tales of the island's rich tradition. Visitors can also learn about the lighthouse's operation and the intangible heritage it carries.

Whether seeking romantic moments or a unique experience filled with natural splendor, Armenistis Lighthouse is the perfect choice. Surrender to the magic of the landscape, get lost in the hues of the sunset, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Tips:

Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water, especially during the summer months.

Embark on the hike early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and strong sun.

Armenistis Lighthouse – A Journey Through Time with a Stunning View

Some places make you feel like time stands still. Armenistis Lighthouse in Mykonos is definitely one of them. Standing proudly on the northwestern edge of the island since 1891, it was built after a tragic shipwreck in the strait between Mykonos and Tinos. Though no longer operational, it remains a silent guardian of the Aegean, carrying the echoes of a bygone era.

The journey to the lighthouse was an experience in itself. Driving my classic 1975 Mini Cooper, I felt like I had stepped back in time. The road becomes a bit rugged towards the end, but the breathtaking views more than make up for it. The endless blue of the Aegean, the silhouette of Tinos on the horizon, and the salty breeze in the air create a scene straight out of a movie.

And then comes the sunset… The sky transforms into a masterpiece of orange, pink, and gold, casting a warm glow over the lighthouse. The serene atmosphere, the whisper of the wind, and the vastness of the sea stretching endlessly before you make it impossible to leave.

Armenistis Lighthouse is not just a landmark—it’s an experience. A place steeped in history, offering unparalleled views and a sense of timelessness. If you ever find yourself in Mykonos and want to escape the crowds for something truly special, this is the place to be. And if you can get there in a vintage car,...

Visiting Armenistis Lighthouse was one of the highlights of our trip to Mykonos. We rented a car for the day, which proved to be well worth the expense, especially for reaching more remote sites like this one. There is no cost of admission or for parking.

The panoramic views from the lighthouse are truly breathtaking. From this elevated vantage point, you gain a remarkable perspective of the Aegean Sea—so expansive that you can even make out the curvature of the earth. Spotting nearby islands in the distance and watching high-speed ferries slice across the water added to the experience.

Although the lighthouse itself was closed to visitors, its presence added a sense of history and atmosphere to the site. We spent about an hour there, taking in the scenery and enjoying the peaceful isolation.

One important note: it was extremely windy during our visit. Guests, particularly those with young children, should take extra care while...
