Pontikókastro — Attraction in Municipality of Pyrgos

Built by the Franks upon the ruins of an ancient Greek fortified city, this was once a castle of significant strategic importance as it overlooked the fertile surrounding plains as well as the port. Unfortunately, little remains to be seen and much will be revealed once the funds to excavate the site are allocated. The ancient city certainly occupied the entirety of the hilltop (most likely the acropolis or citadel) and quite possibly some of the surrounding slopes, most likely all the way to the port as was common with most ancient Greek polis outlays. Το ποντικόκαστρο είναι κτισμένο στον λόφο του Κατάκολου πάνω στα ερείπια της Ακρόπολης της αρχαίας Φειας ,σημαντικού λιμανιού της Πισας και αργότερα της Ηλιδας κατά την αρχαιότητα. Κτίστηκε από τους Φράγκους τον 13 αιώνα ,στην θέση του προϋπήρχε ένα βυζαντινό κάστρο που ονομαζόταν κάστρο του Ποντικού πιθανόν εξαιτίας του σχήματος του λόφου που έμοιαζε με ποντικό. Σήμερα το Κάστρο είναι αφημένο στην τύχη του πνιγμένο στην βλάστηση με τα τείχη του να καταρρέουν ενώ θα μπορούσε με μια συντήρηση από την αρχαιολογική υπηρεσία να γίνει άλλος ένας τουριστικός πόλος έλξης για την περιοχή μιας και έχει πολύ ωραία θεά (εξου και η φραγκική ονομασία του Κάστρου «Μπο Βουαρ» ) και η πρόσβαση στο κάστρο είναι...
