Monolithos is probably one of the most well known and visited of the castle’s on Rhodes due to its spectacular position being constructed on top of a massive 236 metre high rock monolith. With commanding views over the Aegean Sea across to the island of Chalki and sunsets there are awesome! Yet another must see historical location on Rhodes. Entrance is Free!

History There had been a watchtower on the rock since antiquity and later a Byzantine castle. The castle was rebuilt in the 15th century by the Knights of the Order of Saint John who occupied Rhodes in 1309. The reconstruction was started around 1476, by order of Grand Master D’Aubusson (1476-1503). His shield is carved above the gate of the castle.

It used to be one of the 4 strongest castles of Rhodes in the Ioannite period. After the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes in 1522 and when piracy was no longer a major threat, it lost its significance and being rather remote was gradually abandoned.

Structure & Buildings The outer walls of the castle are in relatively good condition with the interior having ruins of water cisterns and remains of the towers. There are also two magnificent 15th century chapels dedicated to St. Panteleimon...

Less of a castle and, more of a castle walls with a tiny church inside. It is situated on top of a monolith rock. Beautiful vistas from the top. Typically, the hotel bus trips stop on the road on the slope of the neighboring mountain to admire the castle from the distance. But you never get to the castle. If you take the bus trip, make sure you find out what the weather is before you go. The first time we saw nothing but fog. Second time, we got a rental and actually went to the castle. The road to the castle is little ways past the overlook where the buses stop. It is curvy so be careful driving. The parking lot is at one of the bends. It is rather small. To get to the top, there is a short walk through the wooded area and a fairly easy climb up the stairs. Like all such places, it might be a challenge for people with mobility problems. Typically, on top, there is a stand with some souvenirs, but no water or food so bring that with you. The top is fairly flat, some areas with tree shade where you can take a breather. Good photo op place. Quite romantic. I would certainly recommend visiting this place. Don't settle for the view from afar. Make an effort and get up there! It...

Perched atop the Castle of Monolithos in Rhodes, the viewpoint offers a captivating experience that combines history, a short invigorating hike, and a stunning panoramic view. The classic castle itself is a remarkable sight, with its ancient walls and imposing architecture adding to the allure. The short hike to reach the viewpoint adds an element of adventure, making the reward even more satisfying. As you reach the top, you are greeted by a breathtaking panoramic view that stretches across the island. The highlight, however, is witnessing the sunset from this vantage point, as the sun gracefully dips below the horizon on the west side of the island. It is a truly magical moment that should not be missed. For those seeking a memorable experience and a front-row seat to nature's spectacular show, the viewpoint at Castle of Monolithos is an...

If You like these kind of old historic places than this is a very nice place to go. The drive over the west coast road has various surprises like "far views" and i think it is much nicer than the other side of the island. Do go early, so it is not too hot, and hopefully you avoid the many tour buses of other tourists with many who walk up and down without actually wanting to spend time there. And do realize.... when you walk up the stairs, there is not a lot from the castle to see. and the old structure / room where you can look through to see the see (as on the pictures shared by others) is sealed off. You can not get close to that.
