Monolithos is probably one of the most well known and visited of the castle’s on Rhodes due to its spectacular position being constructed on top of a massive 236 metre high rock monolith. With commanding views over the Aegean Sea across to the island of Chalki and sunsets there are awesome! Yet another must see historical location on Rhodes. Entrance is Free!
History There had been a watchtower on the rock since antiquity and later a Byzantine castle. The castle was rebuilt in the 15th century by the Knights of the Order of Saint John who occupied Rhodes in 1309. Typically, the hotel bus trips stop on the road on the slope of the neighboring mountain to admire the castle from the distance. But you never get to the castle. Typically, on top, there is a stand with some souvenirs, but no water or food so bring that with you. The top is fairly flat, some areas with tree shade where you can take a breather. Good photo op place. Quite romantic. I would certainly recommend visiting this place. Don't settle for the view from afar. Make an effort and get up there! It...
