Karavomilos Lake in Kefalonia: Karavomilos Lake is one of Kefalonia’s most charming spots while being of great geological and biological importance at the same time; geologically, as it connects through an underground network of caves with the Katavothres of Argostoli, and biologically, since its biodiversity is impressive, being the home of many endemic species! Karavomilos lies 2.5 km northwest of Sami, well-known for encompassing a lot of fascinating geological phenomena due to its location having intense tectonic activity. Nearby lies a picturesque fishing village, homonymous to the lake. They derive their name from the local watermill, which used an iron boat wheel to operate. The lake is artificial, with an almost circular shape and shallow waters. It lies 80 meters from the coast and has been separated from the sea by a wall. The bed of the lake is just 1 meter deep and covered by seaweed and mud. Its water springs from its bottom, and according to research that has been conducted, it flows to the Katavothres in Argostoli through an underground network. The lake is home to many endemic species of flora and fauna, some of them endangered, so its conservation is very important. Visitors have the chance to observe various types of beautiful orchids, as well as majestic birds, such as swans and herons. Plenty of ducks and geese also roam around blissfully. What to do: The lush vegetation, in combination with the wildlife and a beautiful nearby church, makes the walk around the lake an experience you will most certainly enjoy. The scenery is spectacular when you stride along the cobbled path and, in the evenings, the atmosphere is almost magical. Visitors can continue their walk through the beautiful trail that leads to the beach of Sami. While they are in the region, they can also complete your rare geological phenomena tour with a visit to Melissani Cave and Drogarati Cave! Those who want to rest and eat or drink something can stop by the traditional tavern of Karavomilos, right next to the lake. They will enjoy the homemade delicacies under the shade of huge eucalyptus trees. The spectacular view of the sea on one side, and the lake on the other, completes the experience. Enjoy!

I was camping in camping Karavomilos beach, in Sami Kefalonia. From there it is about 15 minutes of walking, along the sea in a picturized road. I crossed about 4 nice bridges over little wster ways, there is also a little port on the way. Then I came to the lake which is a wondwrful place with a very nice tavern. There are also many nice places to sweem in the wonderful cold cristal see water. It is a must to go there at day time and also at night time.

Really nothing special. There isn't much parking space, and the lake itself smells quite bad. However, there's a nice tavern nearby, overlooking the ocean, so you can have a nice drink here. The lake itself is not very big, but there are a couple of geese very eager for attention / bread, as you can see on the pictures. Fun to visit if you're in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't recommend a special visit for this attraction.
