This beautiful Monastery of Theotokos Evagelistria is built on the highest point of Skiathos near the port. Skiathos translated means "At(in) the shade of Athos" Also known as the isle of saints because of its abundance of offspring from the "Kolivades", a religious dispute movement from the 18th to the 19th century. What a spiritual experience this morning, originally a mens monastery it only became accessible to women a few decades ago and it was a blessing to hear the male voices eco through the old walls of the monastery and spread their message to the world while humble devotees trickle in from outside for their blessings and devotions. Its good to be still and just experience the atmosphere here.
The historical value of the monastery is seen in its informative folklore museum with loads of important relics that are kept and displayed inside. This is also the place where the Greek flag was "born", so to speak, in cooperation with sacred abbott Nephon, Nikotsaras and Stathas, they drew, weaved and raised the first blue and white flag here. 🇬🇷 Constructed between 1794 - 1806 #HowzitGreece...
Read moreA stunning monastery with beautiful planting, the oregano pots on the steps will be quite something when they’re fully grown. The sound of morning prayer was memorising. The cats were friendly, especially the one who sits at the water tap near the entrance wanting you to turn the tap on for him so he can have a drink. The monastery shop is full of wonderful things including olive oil and preserves, and of course religious items. The cafe gardens reminded me of an Indian hill station. Lush, green, serene, tranquil and the roses are gorgeous. The cafe has a really good menu (the coffee, and yogurt bowl were not tasty), playing chilled quiet background music, great service, clean toilets, and wonderful views. I spent 3hrs at the monastery/cafe and will definitely go back next time I visit Skiathos, when I will visit the monastery museum. You can get a minibus from bus stop 0 in Skiathos town. €2 each way, but buy your tickets early in the morning as they sell...
Read moreBeautiful oasis of calm and natural beauty. We spent a lovely relaxed 5 hours here pre Stansted flight. Chickens, kittens, peacocks and 2 doggies, birds and cicadas as company. Free chess sets, free WiFi, amazing view and a menu that helped the last of the euros stretch far. (Toasted sandwich for 3.50 for example)Unhurried in the cafe part, interesting 2 euro museum combining history and religion and cool mountain air. Good spot for kids and adults and grannies alike. (Need to be able to do 6 steps up an incline to cafe, but easy and wide and so worth it to the cafe!) As other reviews mention, the whole complex is cash only.( Baklava was 5 euro and greek salad and bread 8. Most expensive item was a massive blt and...
