Things to do in Peten, Guatemala-save for later! This department of Guatemala is often skipped by travelers which is a shame because it is freakin amazing!!! Most people who travel to Guatemala visit Antigua, Acatenango, Lake Atitlan and now El Paredon and for good reason-these places are all incredible! But if you can stay longer, then I highly recommend adding Peten to your list because it is just as magical and beautiful! I think the reason many don’t come here is because it’s far and a bit more difficult to get to. You can take a 9 hr overnight bus from the city (they have day time shuttles, but I don’t recommend that) or a quick 45 min flight, but domestic flights here are expensive. (I paid $170 which in Asia a flight like this would be about $50 or less.) It’s also right on the border of Belize so if you’re coming or going from there it’s an easy stop. Things to do: Visit the Ancient Mayan ruins at Tikal National Park, Yaxha, Uaxactun or do the 5 day Mirador trek. -stay at @junglelodgetikal Spend time on the cute and colorful Isla de Flores. -stay at @hotelisladeflores -eat at @delirio_gt or @maracuyafloresgt Take day trips to: -Tres Naciones-this hidden gem was my absolute favorite! This place was so stunning! -Crater Azul or the Blue Crater -Playa Chezenal -@arcasguate animal rescue center -Maya Mundo museum in San Miguel Take a boat ride and explore different parts of the lake like El Remate! If you’re looking for an expert local guide, photographer and drone pilot to take you to some secret hidden gems contact @experiencias.puroutz -Take a sunset catamaran cruise with @losamigoshostel_ Let me know if I missed anything and tag someone you’d like to come here with! Really beautiful and well organized museum that you can visit for free. It has a big parking lot, free parking as well. The building is a modern style inside and out with lots of information. Unfortunately, there is no info in English, only in Spanish. Outside and on the back side of the building, there are ongoing excavations. One of the guys from the museum was nice enough to accompany me to the excavation sites and gave a brief history and info about the area and findings. Very informative and super nice (this was for free as well). Thank you, and keep up the good work! Definitely recommend visiting this place if you're around

This is a wonderful museum. I don't know why it's not known more. There's also a mound next to it that contains ruins that haven't been excavated yet. The museum is closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. To get there you take a boat from Flores to San Miguel (5q) then a tuk-tuk to the museum (10q or walk). There are several hotels and restaurants along the shore as well, in the opposite direction from the museum.

Really nice free museum. They are still working on the outside area and excavations but should be great in the future. Unfortunately the roof of the museum has not been installed correctly and leaks water which damages the whole building and cracks some of the tiles. Short walk and boat from Flores. Will take about ~1-2 hours when you read (google lens for eng) most of the information.

The museum has some nice Mayan artefact and it is free. Sadly some halls are empty and the floor is braking. The toilets were not clean.
