Definitely worth popping over from Panajachel to check out this beautiful, colourful village. Go to the museum and head straight for the restaurant at the top for the best views. We already had lunch, but had some tasty (and huge drinks). After have a look at some of the artesanal crafts and walk around the town. The painting has helped to boost tourism when there weren’t many people coming otherwise.

About 20 minutes by pickup truck from Panajachel. It is a town built with a city aesthetic plan to attract tourists. The mural was made by modeling the traditional Mayan patterns, and the blue color and the atmosphere of the town go well together. It is good to visit a workshops while walk around through the alleyways.

Stopped into the Pintando office and gift shop during a tour booked by Mayan Gateway of the Lake Atitlan villages. Enjoyed learning about the painted houses scheme in the town and purchased some lovely handwoven souvenirs.

This is a project of painting the houses in Santa Catarina Palopó with traditional Mayan textile patterns, each with different meanings and blessings. Supported by several NGOs, eco paints were produced exclusively for the project. With the help of volunteers around the world and the local painters, this village is now transforming into a destination for cultural tourism which is also expected to improve the living condition of the locals. They are reason why this village has become so colourful and...
