Guyana Marine Turtle Monument — Attraction in City of Georgetown

There are three noteworthy monuments in this area. First being the Marine Turtle Monument which was erected in 2001 to bring awareness to the marine turtles. Second is the Umana Yana which is conical shaped building. It was erected and opened in 1972 for the Non-Aligned Foreign Ministers Conference. It served as the VIP Lounge during the event. After much neglect the first structure was collapsed in 1993 a second structure was built in 1995. The second structure was destroyed by a mysterious fire in September 2014 and the current structure was rebuilt in 2015/16. The third structure is much smaller than the first one erected in 1972. The third significant monument is the African Liberation Monument. The African Liberation Monument was erected in 1974 and designated a National Monument in 2001. This monument is a tribute to Africans who endured the cruelty of slavery and post-slavery discrimination and marginalization. The monument was unveiled August 26, 1974 on Namibia Day. The date of the unveiling was done to show solidarity with the liberation movement in Africa. The monument consists of five greenheart timber poles of various lengths which signifies different ages.
