If I could give this zoo negative 5 stars then I would. The Zoo keeper is sleeping whilst the animals looked starved and neglected but is not just the zookeepers fault but the fact that the zoo is so underfunded with just an entry fee of $200GYD. The zoo pays for more security than it spends conserving and managing the animal welfare.
The sleeping zookeepers at the gates, have moved the the stork from his original enclosure to the enclosure with the tortoise. Now it doesn't take a degree in zoology or biology to know that the storks habitat is big wet mesh lands with large bodies of water between 4-12 inches deep. Oh but they can't keep it in its original enclosure because the tap broke and all their pond has dried so the obvious solution was to put the stork in with the tortoise - this is the insanity of the Guyanese people who run the zoo.
And the outside of this, is the stork, is pacing up and down the tiny cage, biting their neck until the skin is raw and dragging his beak against the cage to anyone that can listen to his cries. The passerby's thinks it's fun to watch the stork be stressed and stressed. This stork will die if stress and lack of water within it natrual habitat.
The attitude of the zookeepers were appalling when I told them about the stressed stork. They said that the stork has water because it is with the tortoise. Surely it is within the remit of the zookeper to understand the habitats of each animal and to get the TAP WITH FLOWING WATER TO BE FIXED FOR THE STORK to live a somewhat good quality of life. It would actually make more sense for the stork to temporarily live with the mallard ducks but the staff and whoever owns the zoo are literally too thick for this.
OR release the stork to live with the manities - it doesn't deserve to be pacing in the cage like that.
This is just the Stork! 🤦🏾♀️What happened to the cappybaras, and he cute little pigs next to the mccaws need to constantly have wet mushy muddy grounds - so you're telling me, buckets of water could not be thrown into their enclosure to turn the dust into mud??? You guys are so silly, Guyana doesn't deserve a zoo if it can't maintain basic animal welfare.
Also....the monkeys have no toys and no stimulation but a long oeice of rope to swing on, they are literally so easy to care for but you're making it look hard.
The zookeepers should ask the public for donations instead of sitting on their arses and sleeping all dam day.

Read moreThe entry price is too low, in my opinion, at around $1 USD. There is a fee for those who want to video record the animals at around $10 USD. The staff is quite friendly and have an easy-going. The enclosures are generally clean and well-kept, while the animals seem to be fed sufficiently. It truly is wonderful to observe God's creations, especially the Harpy eagles as they are majestic. At the same time, it is a bit sad to know that they are confined to cages, but, I have heard that most of the animals were rescues, so that is nice to know. Unfortunately, I was not able to see the manatee, however, spotting it may be difficult, as its habitat is the biggest. I believe that all the other animals have enough space, as their enclosures are relatively large. There is also a petting zoo area with horses, rabbits and goats. Even though, the zoo is small and you can probably see everything in around ten minutes, I would still recommend that you visit whenever you can. Parents with toddlers should be cautious, as there is a side of a pond that is not barricaded, which can be a potential hazard. All in all, I would definitely want to visit in the future, whenever I come back to Guyana. I am sure that in the near future, we can expect improvements and possibly even new animals. I hope in the future that they revamp their...
Read moreThere's a lot to say about Guyana's zoo... Firstly, the entry fee is very reasonable but is it worth it? Most of the cages are empty and those that have animals, are filthy. You can see that the animals are tired and depressed. The facilities are poorly maintained. There's a petting zoo and an aquarium that are absolutely run down and abandoned. There's a bridge that is used to walk across a pond and it looks like it has seen better days. It is like a big safety hazard. Lastly, how it infuriates me with a great passion. Guyana has continuously boasted about our rich wildlife and you're telling me you can't have a single one of those great species of wildlife present in your zoo?! The madness. The zoo is still the same after all those years and is continuously...
