It is more for children and so for families, than a couple's trip. At the ticket office we were asked if we wanted to join a tour, after we agreed, we were told to pay...1000 ft/ adult, 500 ft / kid. If you have the money to spend, go for it, but it's not a must. (The guide speaks good English, German for sure). The new big renovation didn't add so much to it for us, as it's basically showing us how the castle developed over the centuries over and over again. The movie was good, but the exhibition of pots could gave been made in a more imaginative way. And the food options are really limited (chimney cake and bread with toppings). Wear comfortable shoes for the way up.

Well worth a visit! Easy, free parking and reasonable charge for entry to castle with stunning views. Everyone enjoyed their ‘Chimney cakes’ while exploring the castle grounds but the highlight of our visit had to be paying a modest extra fee to watch the Historical Equestrian Games held certain days at 4pm during the summer months. (Optional extra to stay for the medieval banquet after the show). Despite not understanding any Hungarian we really enjoyed the show - horses, performances- stunts, jousting, knights giving fair maidens a flower, hall decorations and costumes were all brilliant and it should be a definite addition to anyone’s visit to the area.

Seeing and visiting the Sümeg castle reminds one of the midieval times the Hungarians once went through. Although not large of size, the location and design of the castle makes it look powerful and bigger from below than it actually is after you have climbed up the (very) steep pathway that leads to the castle. Please be aware! That this pathway is truly steep and slippery and is definitely not suited for visitors who are not mobile physically. The view after walking up this exhausting path is okay, but not extremely impressive as you can see on the photos. I did not go inside the castle at that time, but the normal entrance fee is 1500 HUF if I remember correctly. It is not free to enter. On the lower end of the pathway are some life-sized wooden constructions of midieval tools and weaponry, which are interesting to check out. If you visit the castle, that’s fine and you won’t regret it. But if you don’t get the chance to go up and visit, you will not miss too much either.

We visited this place because the weather interrupted our vacation at Balaton and we were very pleasantly surprised by how well this castle is presented. Carefully rebuilt from ruins, it now serves as a museum that gives you a very good idea what castle life was actually like. There are numerous exhibits and many of the rooms are decorated in a historical fashion. The tickets are also very reasonable. If there is anything to complain about it's that there is no access for disabled or elderly people, as in order to get to the castle one must climb a tall mountain and there is no lift or even stairs.
