My favourite castle in Hungary. Tickets is 2500 HUF for adults. Sümeg Castle, perched atop a steep hill in western Hungary, is a striking example of medieval military architecture. Constructed in the mid-13th century following the Mongol invasion, it served as a key defensive stronghold for the Kingdom of Hungary. The fortress gained strategic importance under Bishop György Széchényi in the 17th century, who transformed it into a well-fortified episcopal residence. Throughout the centuries, Sümeg Castle witnessed numerous battles, including Ottoman sieges, and played a crucial role in protecting the region. Though partially damaged by fire in the early 18th century, the castle remained a symbol of Hungarian resilience. In recent decades, it has been extensively restored and now serves as a major tourist attraction. Visitors can explore its medieval halls, enjoy historical reenactments, and learn about Hungary’s feudal past. Sümeg Castle stands today as a proud testament to the country’s rich and...
Read moreSeeing and visiting the Sümeg castle reminds one of the midieval times the Hungarians once went through. Although not large of size, the location and design of the castle makes it look powerful and bigger from below than it actually is after you have climbed up the (very) steep pathway that leads to the castle. Please be aware! That this pathway is truly steep and slippery and is definitely not suited for visitors who are not mobile physically.
The view after walking up this exhausting path is okay, but not extremely impressive as you can see on the photos.
I did not go inside the castle at that time, but the normal entrance fee is 1500 HUF if I remember correctly. It is not free to enter.
On the lower end of the pathway are some life-sized wooden constructions of midieval tools and weaponry, which are interesting to check out.
If you visit the castle, that’s fine and you won’t regret it. But if you don’t get the chance to go up and visit, you will not miss too...
Read moreNice castle with a beautiful view all around. It tries to show how life was during old times when the castle was used. Traditional trades like falconing and bow shooting are also shown (explanations only in Hungarian). You can try some traditional snacks made before your eyes. Various games are scattered around for trying (mostly for children, but some of them.are enjoyable for adults, too), there is also a traditional puppet theater. Traditional farm animals like goats, geese and donkeys are also part of the castle's life. The history of the castle are shown in more smaller exhibition rooms as you walk and explore. The castle itself is not easy to reach, because the way is very steep and quite long, and you have to leave your car at the foot of the hill...
