A small family winery, like many/most in the Tokaj region of Hungary, Himesudvar produces the full range of wines (dry to sweet) common in this area. Tastings (24,900 HUF ($72 US) for the grand tour, much less expensive tastings available, May 2023) include the wine tasting (in their beautiful courtyard), a free bottle of wine (or credit towards a more expensive bottle), a choice of a nice food offering, a tour of the cellar, a short drive to the vineyard, and a dropoff to the place of your choosing. Good English is spoken.
Himesudvar is a winery driven by the owners’ passion to produce the best possible wines it can and in this endeavor, it definitely succeeds. They use (maybe you could say specialize in) some of the lesser known varieties of grapes to great effect. One style of wine where I think this really comes to fruition is in their Szamorodni (a particular Tokaj wine style). These are some of the best (I haven’t had them all so I can’t say best, alright I’ll say best) Szamorodni in Tokaj. They are made from some of these lesser known varieties and are just superlative.
For me, other highlights include the 2019 Harslevelu (semi-sweet). I could sit on my porch, on a nice summer day, and sip this forever. It’s just perfect. The 2013 Aszu which also employs lesser known varieties is simply sublime. Absolute perfection.
Himesudvar only sells through its winery so you won’t find their stuff in shops. Go there, try the wines, get an education in Tokaj...
Read moreOur wine tasting experience at Himesudvar in Tokaj was truly unforgettable! The wines were exceptional — beautifully crafted, well-explained, and showcased the unique character of the Tokaj region.
What made the experience even more memorable was our guide, Dalma. She was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the wines and the region’s rich history. She walked us through each wine with such care and detail, making the tasting both educational and enjoyable. She made us feel comfortable asking questions and truly enriched the experience with her insights.
We left with a deeper appreciation for Tokaj wines — and a few bottles to take home! If you’re visiting Tokaj, Himesudvar is an absolute must. The wines are outstanding, the setting is charming, and if you get the chance to have Dalma as your guide, you’re in for a truly special experience....
Read moreWe had a really good time at this winery. The owner knows also english so foreigners can book and attend. The full tasting experience was a bit long but worth it. You go through all their 6 most iconic wines and you will find out everything you need to know about the grapes, region, vinifaction etc. Also took a short trip to the vineyard from where you can see the surroundings and if ripe maybe taste some grapes. They are family owned and run so they produce only very small batches so will not find their wines anywhere else. A true local business. If you just have time to try or buy one wine, ask for the Kaleidoscope, has some fresh and fine aromas Inguarantee you will appreciate and, not as sweet as the famous Assu. The only thing I would have like was to have the tasting putside in the beautiful yard, not down in the shop. Other than I really...
