A visit to Akranes Lighthouse is an unforgettable experience that beautifully combines natural beauty, historical significance, and serene surroundings. Located on the west coast of Iceland, this iconic lighthouse offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore one of the country's most picturesque and tranquil spots.

The lighthouse itself is a stunning piece of architecture, standing tall and proud against the backdrop of the sea. Its white structure is striking against the rugged coastline, making it a perfect subject for photography enthusiasts. The climb to the top is well worth the effort, as it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean, nearby mountains, and the charming town of Akranes.

Inside, the lighthouse houses a small but informative exhibit detailing its history and the role it has played in guiding sailors safely to shore. The displays are well-curated and provide fascinating insights into the maritime heritage of the region.

Akranes Lighthouse is a must-visit for anyone traveling through Iceland. Its combination of historical charm, stunning views, and peaceful surroundings make it a standout destination. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a serene spot to unwind, Akranes Lighthouse will...

One of the highlights of our trip was walking into the Akranes lighthouse! We had a delightful discussion with three Icelanders! One, sorry I didn't catch the names of all three!:(,showed us several you tube videos of concerts at the lighthouse! Awesome! One, Bjorn Ludviksson, was the husband and a contributing photographer for the Moon publication of the Iceland guidebook by his wife Jenna Gottlieb which helped me plan our entire trip! And the third was the photographer who would display his work next. We loved the exhibit on display already and despite not getting to go to the top of the lighthouse and go outside up there we appreciated their concern for our safety and our very fun conversation! It was a very special part of our trip. Thanks, K and Lowell...

Old Akranes Lighthouse is one of the iceland landmarks and is very near the capital Reykjavik, just north about 15 mins drive and you will reach.

It is kind of meaningful to me because back in Singapore during my army national service, I was guarding one of the key installations - Jurong Island. Also have oil tankers and lighthouse like here so it kind of triggers my younger memories 😅😆

Anyway, on a serious note, the lighthouse there is for a purpose - that is to guide sailors in the olden days the directions so they don't land on the wrong harbour etc, where the advanced navigation and/or GPS is not available back then. I heard this from the captain on day 2 of whales 🐋 watching fyi, am not that...

The place to be for every lighthouse lover 👍 Very nice small town, in 40 min from Reykjavik and near to many attractions in Snaefellsnes Peninsula in Iceland, so it's perfect location to visit many interesting places around. The place to be in Akranes, for sure is a Lighthouse, since 1944, unique in Iceland which is possible to visit inside, climbing to the top. From the top you can see a beautiful panorama of 360° , this wonderful and romantic place offer some exhibitions and local music concerts. Climbe the Lighthouse and enjoy the beautiful moment !
