A must detour from Egilsstaðir. Initially, I was contemplating whether to drive through the scary mountain passes. In the end, I told myself I must witness puffin since I've missed a few chances in the south of the island. Thank god I've made the right decision ! I reached here in the evening at 8pm, there were so many puffins around, and I was just standing less than a meter away from them ! No regrets for taking up the challenge to drive through the mountain pass.

Tip for fainthearted drivers driving at the mountain passes, just keep your car speed slow (~30 km/h) especially when turning the corner uphill or downhill. Pay attention to the road in front of you instead of look far ahead down the cliff when driving and have someone keep watching the road/oncoming vehicles ahead for you. When there is no oncoming vehicle on the opposite direction, you can drive a little more towards their lane...

If you want to see puffins, this is the one place you need to go. We were here from 23:00-24:00 on June 1 and this place was covered in puffins. We were also the only ones here at the time (a few people were leaving just as we arrived).

As long as you're quiet, the puffins will stick around. There are walkways and a little building where you can sit and watch the puffins without having to stand in the cold. You don't need binoculars to see the puffins either - they're hanging around within feet of you.

The drive here is a little rough, especially if there's fog (like we had), so assume it will take a little longer to drive here than what GPS says. I think it took us about 2 hours to get there from Seydisfjordur although the GPS said it would take 1.5 hours. This place was 100% worth the drive though.

TLDR; Takes a while to get here, but so worth it to see hundreds of puffins within just a few...

My review will be a review for travelers who are looking for information and doing this stop outside the ring road.

First of all, yes you will see puffins. The thousands of other reviews all say the same thing. Other tips:

If you are doing ring road and coming from Egilsstadir, you will be taking 94 up. The road now is completely paved so 2wd are easily doable.

The first 40 mins of the drive are fine, nothing special. But once you start to descend on the valley winding path you will experience the most gorgeous view in Iceland. Soak that in, there is a pullout on the right side on your way down that is easy to miss.

The puffins are super cute. Parking is free and there is a very short walk to the cliff area where you will see puffins super close. I have been to all the other puffin locations (westman island, dyrholaey etc). Borgarfjaroarhofn is by FAR the best place to see...

We took a 2hr detour to visit this remote village in Northeast Iceland because we heard it’s the Puffin Capital of the country 😍 BORGARFJÖRÐUR EYSTRI is home to about 10,000 nesting puffins every summer. They come here from mid-April to mid-August to nest in their little burrows on the side of the cliff. It’s one of the most accessible and easiest ways to see them as the boardwalk here lets you walk alongside their colony within arm’s reach without interfering with the nesting process. The little village of Bakkagerði (population of just 1000) is just a few minutes away and a great place to stay for the night if you’re coming out here for the puffins. We of course ended up here on the busiest day of the year, when Bakkagerði hosts it’s annual music fest and all of Iceland comes to camp and hang out 😁 💃 #familytravel #travelwithkids #kidswhoexplore #takethekids #adventurefamily #icelandtravel #icelandtrip #icelandroadtrip #ringroad #icelandwithkids #puffins #easticeland #reimakidventure #reimakid
