The more beautiful of the 2 waterfalls next to each other; the water comes out of NOWHERE and looks just magical in contrast to the black lava rock. The color of the falls is a pure blue.
Easy walk from the parking lot - only 2 minutes. Easy to walk the rest and you would spend about 30min-1h to explore both waterfalls.
There's a cafe I think opened during the summer. Free parking from when we went, but I read bathrooms are paid.
Only about 5 other groups when we went (early October 2024); this is a perfect addition if you're looking for a day trip in West Iceland or starting/ending your ring road trip. IMO, I would NOT journey to this area JUST for this - so plan your day with other things (Vidgelmir cave, Krauma Spa, etc) if you do want to see it.
You won't regret it! Absolute great way to start/end ring road.

Read moreHraunfossar Waterfall is a bit different than some of the other dramatic waterfalls in Iceland. The falls, which literally mean “Lava Waterfall” in Icelandic, got its name because the water streams out of the lava fields in the area and flows down in hundreds of little cascades for almost a kilometer, giving it a relaxing and calming effect. It’s a great stop when visiting the inner-western part of Iceland, just north of Reykjavík and inland from Snæfellsjökull Peninsula. You can reach it in under 2 hours from Reykjavík or 15 minutes from Reykholt. If you are in the area, it’s worth it to go to Húsey and from there take one of the more popular tours: Into the Glacier, which is so much fun! Hraunfossar is also great because you can visit any time of year and at any time of day and enjoy the views. There is also a place for restrooms (with a small fee) and a cute cafe nearby with hot...
Read moreHraunfossar ( Lava Falls ) is in Borgarfjorour distric a majestic series of waterfalls streaming out of the Hallmundarhraun lava field and is right next to Barnafoss ( children falls ) also close by is Viogelmir the longest Cave in Iceland. There is different trails that gave you multiple point of view of the falls and I like the contrast of colors the black lava rock with the turquoise blue waters. You can walk both waterfalls easily in less than an hour. I probably recommend to come early if you want to avoid the crowds seen is relatively close to Reykjavik around 1 hour and 40 minutes drive and right by the Ring road so is an easy access...
