This church has a remarkable story. Actually, it is from before the current one was built. The most significant Icelandic hymn poet and priest Hallgrímur Pétursson served here for seven years (1644-1651). This was his first appointment as priest. Read the story of Hallgrímur and his wife Guðríður Símonardóttir. That is amazing stuff. Whilst at Hvalsnes, they had a daughter, Steinunn, who died very young. The very handy Hallgrímur made a gravestone for their daughter in his great bereavement. The stone was lost for quite some time but then it was found again as a slab in the pathway to the church.
