This church has a remarkable story. Actually, it is from before the current one was built. The most significant Icelandic hymn poet and priest Hallgrímur Pétursson served here for seven years (1644-1651). This was his first appointment as priest. Read the story of Hallgrímur and his wife Guðríður Símonardóttir. That is amazing stuff. Whilst at Hvalsnes, they had a daughter, Steinunn, who died very young. The very handy Hallgrímur made a gravestone for their daughter in his great bereavement. The stone was lost for quite some time but then it was found again as a slab in the pathway to the church. It is now placed besides the altar...

Hvalsneskirkja is a beautiful stone church in Hvalsnes on the Reykjanes peninsula, built in the years 1886-87.remake of the one at Domkirkjan, Iceland's main Lutheran church, and painted in 1886. One of the Hvaleyrarkirkja's main relics is the tombstone of Steinunn Hallgrimsdottir (d. 1649), daughter of the major hymn poet and priest Hallgrimur Petursson (wherefrom Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik...

This church was beautiful. My friend and I wanted to see one of the famous black churches, but the most photographed one was farther north than we were willing to travel especially with the weather we ended up having for most of our trip. I came across this black church and we just had to visit it after our trip to the Blue Lagoon. Highly recommend...

Small humble black church, beautiful, built from carved basaltic stones in 1887. Can't get into the church, but the scenery around itself is already worth the 2 minutes detour from Road 45. Only small part of gravel road, very little tourists. You can almost have the whole place to yourself
