Geysir, located in the Haukadalur Valley of southwest Iceland, is a renowned geothermal area famous for its spectacular hot springs, including the eponymous Great Geysir. This area is a geothermal wonderland that offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the Earth's natural forces.

The Great Geysir, after which all other geysers are named, is the star attraction. While it doesn't erupt as frequently as it once did, when it does, it shoots scalding water and steam high into the air, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's power.

Strokkur, another geyser in the area, is equally impressive and is known for its regular eruptions, sending jets of boiling water up to 30 meters into the sky every few minutes. This predictability makes it a favorite among visitors and photographers.

In addition to the geysers, the Geysir Hot Springs area is adorned with bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and colorful mineral deposits. The geothermal landscape is both eerie and enchanting, showcasing the otherworldly beauty of Iceland's volcanic terrain.

Visiting the Geysir Hot Springs area allows you to witness the Earth's geothermal activity up close. It's a captivating reminder of the geological forces at work beneath the surface of our planet and provides a unique opportunity to connect with the raw power of nature.

Exploring this geothermal wonderland is not only educational but also a memorable and surreal experience, as you stand in awe of the natural wonders that have shaped Iceland's striking landscapes...

The Geysir Geothermal Area is one of the most fascinating stops along Iceland’s Golden Circle, offering a dramatic and up-close look at the power bubbling beneath the earth’s surface. Though the original Great Geysir (from which all geysers get their name) is now mostly dormant, its neighbor Strokkur puts on a reliable and thrilling show — erupting every 4 to 8 minutes, shooting hot water 15 to 20 meters into the air.

Watching Strokkur erupt never gets old. The anticipation builds as the ground bubbles and hisses, then suddenly, a column of steaming water blasts into the sky. It’s exciting, a little startling, and completely mesmerizing. The surrounding geothermal area is equally interesting, with steaming vents, bubbling mud pots, and vividly colored mineral deposits that make the landscape feel otherworldly.

The site is well set up for visitors, with walking paths, signage, and a nearby visitor center that includes a large café, gift shop, and clean restrooms. It’s an easy stop with a lot to see, especially if you take time to walk the full loop and explore beyond just the main geyser.

Geysir is a must-see — a unique, dynamic landscape that reminds you how alive the...

Geysir is a geothermal area along Rt 35 along the famous Golden Circle in Haukadalur Valley in Iceland. There is plenty of parking (750kr for regular vehicle, payable through Parka app), visitor centre, several restaurants, hotel, campsite and self-service petrol station at Geysir. Easy to spend 45 minutes to an hour enjoying the unique landscape, geysir eruptions and geothermal activity at this very popular sightseeing location.

Geysir takes it name from the now dormant Great Geysir which until the early 20th-century would erupt to great heights in the sky. While the Great Geysir only erupts on rare occasions these days, usually following earthquakes. There is another geysir called Strokkur here that regularly spouts every 5-10 minutes, reaching a height of up to 20-30 metres. This drawls fair sized crowds and because of its fairly predictable eruption patterns, is fairly easy to photograph.

In addition to seeing Strokkur, there are a number of bubbling pools, steaming vents, mud pools and mineral encrusted grounds that make the area rather beautiful to walk around and...

A Must-Visit Natural Wonder! Geysir Hot Springs is absolutely stunning! The star of the show, Strokkur, erupts every few minutes, sending boiling water high into the sky—an awe-inspiring sight that never gets old. The area is well-maintained with clear walking paths, allowing you to safely explore the geothermal landscape. The smell of sulfur is noticeable but adds to the authenticity of the experience. The visitor center nearby has great facilities, including a shop and café, making it a comfortable stop for travelers. Pro tip: Visit early or later in the day to avoid crowds and get the best photos. Don't forget to wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather! Highly recommend adding this to your Iceland itinerary. — A thrilled traveler
