The Staðarbjörg Basalt Columns are located just next to swimming pool in Hofsós and across the street from Hofsóskirkja (church). There is a shared carpark with a pathway that lead down to a nice viewpoint of the the well defined basalt cliffs in both directions.

You can take very nice pictures of the basalt cliffs and walk down further to the lower level columns which are beautifully shaped and really nice to see up close near sea level. We very much enjoyed seeing the columns here at Hofsós. Well worth the 15-20 minute stop if you are interested to see fine examples of basalt columns up close and personally while travelling...

My wife and I had seen the Giant Causeway a few weeks prior to coming to see this. It is not large an area as that in Northern Ireland but I like the serenity and the beauty. There were only a few people there at about noon at end of May. We did not realise there was a thermal hot spring pool next to it facing the sea. It is not a big pool but what a view. They only charge a very small fee (1300...

It’s a worthwhile stop if you’re in Hofsos. You can see the basalt columns up close with minimal crowds. We went early morning around 8 am and we were the only people there. Parking is free and located where google maps will take you. You have to climb down several stairs to get close to the columns. Expect to spend at least 30...
