We stumbled upon this museum by chance, unexpectedly. We were aware of a restaurant in the area but had no idea the museum existed. It turned out to be one of the most pleasant surprises of our two-week trip around Iceland. The two people who run and welcome visitors to the museum were among the warmest, friendliest, and most engaging individuals we met during our journey. They were happy to chat at length and share detailed insights about the region and Iceland as a whole.

The museum itself is well worth a visit. It offers a humble and thoughtful portrayal of rural life: the lighthouses that dot the peninsula and their significance in this environment, the tools and crafts that supported local livelihoods, and a charming glimpse into everyday Icelandic life through objects like appliances, knitting machines, and vintage radios. A visit is 100% recommended if you find yourself in this quiet corner of the country....

This is a cute little museum, with attached restaurant, that isn't far from the airport. If you like boats, tractors and a glimpse into how people used to live in Iceland then the Heritage Museum will be what you're looking for.

Essentially it's one of those free museums that's stuffed with interesting odds and ends that shine a light on the past and what it was like for ordinary people. It's put together very well and the staff are extremely keen to reach out and explain whatever you're puzzling over.

The museum also has a little shop, with gifts that you probably won't find anywhere else, while upstairs there's an excellent restaurant that's far better than it has any right to be. Overall this is a nice place to stop if you're...

What a great display of antique engines. Had a long layover at the Reykjavik airport so we rented a car and drove to this place to eat breakfast. The restaurant wasn’t open until dinner but the museum was ! The staff there explained everything, told stories about the pieces and the history of the country. We were on our way home to USA from Paris and it was the highlight for me. I enjoyed it more than all the castles and Cathedrals we had seen. I highly recommend a visit if...

We just happened to find this little gem while looking at the lighthouses in the area. The museum is full of Icelandic culture and traditions. There is history on the homes, the light houses, the lifestyles and past traditions of the Icelandic people. The gift shop is amazing, stocking many local handmade items. The staff is beyond friendly and helpful! It is only 15 minutes from the airport so plan a stop here on your way in or out of this wonderful country.
