We stumbled upon this museum by chance, unexpectedly. We were aware of a restaurant in the area but had no idea the museum existed. It turned out to be one of the most pleasant surprises of our two-week trip around Iceland. The two people who run and welcome visitors to the museum were among the warmest, friendliest, and most engaging individuals we met during our journey. They were happy to chat at length and share detailed insights about the region and Iceland as a whole.
The museum itself is well worth a visit. It offers a humble and thoughtful portrayal of rural life: the lighthouses that dot the peninsula and their significance in this environment, the tools and crafts that supported local livelihoods, and a charming glimpse into everyday Icelandic life through objects like appliances, knitting machines, and vintage radios. Essentially it's one of those free museums that's stuffed with interesting odds and ends that shine a light on the past and what it was like for ordinary people. It's put together very well and the staff are extremely keen to reach out and explain whatever you're puzzling over.
