Akola's oldest Shiva temple is Rajeshwar Mandir. The Shiv temple was built by Chola Empire king Raj Rajeswar.
One of the oldest temple in Akola, Rajeshwar Mandir, also known as Rajeshwar Nagari, is located in the famous Akola Fort. Linga in the temple has a little crack. The reason behind the crack is a story, which took place during the reign of King Akola Singh. It is said that King Akola Singh's wife used to go out in the midnight for illicit reasons. So one day King Akola Singh followed her. Seeing the king stalking, she went straight to a Shiva temple and pleaded to the god that her husband is not keeping faith and loyalty to her. She then requested lord Shiva to convert her into a lingam. Later, the lingam broke into two parts and she jumped into it. People from all walks of life visit the temple during Monday as it is considered as auspicious.
Raj Rajeshwar Temple, located inside Akola Fort, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is the oldest temple in the area. It is visited by a number of devotees and tourists throughout the year. Old legend says that a decent queen staying in the fort nearby was an ardent devotee of Lord Rajeshwara. She use to come to the temple in midnight to worship as part of some vrata. Once she saw her husband - the king following her with a sword. she went to the temple and offered her worship. She prayed the God to take her inside the Shivlinga as there was no meaning in living further as her husband has suspected her. So the shiva linga opened and accomodated the queen in it. only her hair and a part of the clothing ......proof of the legend. Shivdarshan
AKOLA FORT Its earliest form of mud was made by one Akol Singh to protect the village. He saw a hare chasing a dog and considering this to be an auspicious sign, he built an earthen wall here to protect the village. Akola was heavily fortified in 1697 CE during the reign of Aurangzeb by Asad Khan, from whom the fort took its name (Asadgad). While at The time of Chatrapati sambhaji Maharaj Maratha army had chased Mughal troop up to Akola and Murtijapur to terror over mughal for the safety of people. In 1803, Arthur Wellesley camped here before proceeding to win the Battle of Argaon in the Second Anglo-Maratha War.The fortress was dismantled by the British Raj in about 1870. It was reported in 1910 in a district gazetteer that the central part of the fort (the hawakhana) was used as a school.

One of the richest history of Maharashtra , India . The tales related to this place are simply mesmerizing.One should definitely visit this place if possible , mainly during 'Shraavan Maas' and especially on Mondays(Dedicated Day of Lord Shiva as per Hindus and Hinduism).One of the oldest temple in Akola district . The lingam in the temple has a slight crack on it approximately in the center .It is believed that the queen/wife of King Akol Singh used to visit the Raj Rajeshwar temple every midnight to fulfill her vows/vrat/fast.One day the king came to know about this and was curious to know the exact reason that why and where does she go ? . He decided to follow his queen with a sword as he was doubtful that his queen is not faithful to him , the queen saw this and immediately ran towards the lingam and prayed to lord shiva to take her inside the lingam as her husband was not keeping faith in her, found it insulting and also did not find any purpose/meaning in living and spending her life with him . Proximately , the lingam opened/broke itself into two parts and took the queen inside and further got closed . Later , the king realized his mistake but was too late to rectify it. It is also said and believed that till many years , people were able to see the hair and some part of queen's clothes hanging out of the lingam which slowly perished with respect to time .
