Akshayavat or Akshay Vat ("the indestructible banyan tree") is believed to be the oldest standing tree on Earth, Akshay Vat is a banyan tree that has been mentioned in many religious texts. Legend has it that Goddess Sita once blessed the Akshay Vat (tree) to be immortal and never ever shed a leaf in any season. Another story says that Lord Narayan once flooded the earth to display his powers to sage Markandeya, and the only thing that was not submerged was this tree. In the epic Ramayana, this tree has been said to be the resting place of Lord Rama. Jain scriptures also declare that a tirthankara, Rishabha, once meditated extensively under this tree. Thus, it is considered sacred by the Jains. Akshay Vat lies in close proximity to the Vishnupad Temple.

We went to pay homage to the banyan tree who received blessings of Maa Sita to be immortal and revered for time immeasurable. The boon was for its honesty and steadfastness. It is spread far and wide and one may find numerous red coloured pieces of cloth tied on its thick branches all around. I took parikrama twice. The complex has huge parking space and has better infrastructure, but seemed underutilized.

From there, we went to the nearby pond where the housekeeping personnel were cleaning it as it had turned overly dirty. The establishment and the surroundings can be transformed into spots that can be mesmerizing, but the administrative machinery and masses are not paying much heed to it.

But it was a splendid experience...
