Akshayavat or Akshay Vat ("the indestructible banyan tree") is believed to be the oldest standing tree on Earth, Akshay Vat is a banyan tree that has been mentioned in many religious texts. Legend has it that Goddess Sita once blessed the Akshay Vat (tree) to be immortal and never ever shed a leaf in any season. Another story says that Lord Narayan once flooded the earth to display his powers to sage Markandeya, and the only thing that was not submerged was this tree. In the epic Ramayana, this tree has been said to be the resting place of Lord Rama. Jain scriptures also declare that a tirthankara, Rishabha, once meditated extensively under this tree. Thus, it is considered sacred by the Jains. Akshay Vat lies in close proximity to the Vishnupad Temple.

In Bihar state here the Great place. This temple looking very anciant temple and Buda parpidha Maheshwar temple also nearer there. The Akshay Vat is considered a very holy place. The final Pinda dhan has to be offered here and the Gaya Sharddha is considered and finished only after this is done by Hindus. The place is clean and nice. The tree is very old and prohit is available all through the day to receive the Pinda and do the rituals.

Despite rush entire area was neat and clean, thanks to administration. गया का अक्षयवट भी एक ऐसी वेदी है, जहां पिंडदान किए बिना श्राद्ध पूरा नहीं होता। लोग अश्विन कृष्ण पक्ष की प्रतिपदा तिथि से पूरे पितृपक्ष की समाप्ति तक गया में आकर पिंडदान करते हैं। यहां 45 वेदियां हैं जहां पिंडदान किया जाता है। अक्षयवट के पास पूर्वजों को दिए गए भोजन का फल कभी समाप्त नहीं होता। गया ही एक ऐसा स्थान है, जहां सात गोत्रों में 121 पीढि़यों का पिंडदान और तर्पण होता है। पिंडदान में माता, पिता, पितामह, प्रपितामह, प्रमाता, वृद्ध प्रमाता, प्रमातामह, मातामही, प्रमातामही, वृद्ध प्रमातामही, पिताकुल, माताकुल, श्वसुर कुल, गुरुकुल, सेवक के नाम से किया जाता है। गया श्राद्ध का जिक्र कर्म पुराण, नारदीय पुराण, गरुड़ पुराण, वाल्मीकि रामायण, भागवत पुराण, महाभारत सहित कई धर्मग्रंथों में मिलता है। अक्षयवट के बारे में कहा जाता है कि इसे खुद भगवान ब्रह्मा ने स्वर्ग से लाकर रोपा था।
