Visited Goa Chitra Museum after hearing great reviews and was totally in awe of what Victor has done to bring together an eclectic collection of objects across Goan and Indian history under one roof, all individually curated and painstakingly restored. This is one of the largest exhibits of this nature, truly worthy of the time you spend. The space is divided into three distinct zones - one which catalogues vehicles over the 100s of years from different states, the second which documents Goan culture and history, and the third which speaks to day to day objects from the people of this land, as well as an ode to the very first medical facility of its kind in India, which was started right here in Goa. Sushant was assigned as our guide - a gem of a person who walked and talked us through the entire space. A treasure trove of knowledge, Sushant answered all our questions and gave us anecdotal stories of how some of these pieces of history came to be. He was interactive throughout and put us all at ease through his personality and his vast, multilingual vocabulary that connected with people from other states too. The photos in this review show only a few of the thousands of items in the museum. I would definitely recommend every person coming to Goa to take out an afternoon for this ~1-2 hour tour and take in the culture and heritage of this land, while also admiring the efforts of Victor and his team to curate and maintain Goa Chitra Museum, as well as the guides who provide a truly immersive experience!

The Goa Chitra Museum is an absolute must-visit destination and should definitely be included in your itinerary when visiting Goa. The museum offers a fascinating collection of historic artifacts that are beautifully preserved and thoughtfully displayed. The entry fee to the museum is Rs. 300 per person, which is well worth the experience you'll have. One of the highlights of visiting the museum is the complementary guide that comes with your ticket purchase. These guides are not just knowledgeable, but they also make the entire walkthrough interactive and engaging. They go above and beyond to ensure that visitors are not only informed but also actively involved in the experience. Their passion for the subject matter shines through, and they make the visit truly memorable. I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of the museum for their hard work and dedication. It is evident that they take pride in their work and strive to create a welcoming and enriching environment for visitors. Their efforts truly enhance the overall experience and make the museum visit a standout highlight of any trip to Goa. In conclusion, I highly recommend a visit to the Goa Chitra Museum. The impressive collection of historic artifacts, the interactive guided tour, and the outstanding staff make it a truly remarkable and unforgettable destination.

The Goa Chitra is an ethnographic museum based in the former Portuguese colony (and now India's smallest state) of Goa. It has a large collection—over 4000 artefacts [1]—focusing on Goa's traditional agrarian technology and lifestyle. Goa Chitra Museum Goa Chitra Museum, entrance. Goa Chitra is based in the coastal Goan village of Benaulim. It was founded and is run (2010) by the artist-curator-restorer Victor-Hugo Gomes. TimeOut Mumbai has described the museum as "[o]ne of Goa's most charming attractions" and add that "this little rural complex houses thousands of traditional implements, vessels and tools that evolved over centuries in the agrarian heartland of Goa in the service of farming and other traditional trades" Goa Chitra's collection includes examples of local pottery, farming tools, musical instruments, ancient carts and palanquins[3]—from different points of the past. It also showcases an organic farm for the cultivation of various vegetables, herbs, spices, sugarcane, and rice—all staples of the area in coastal western India. Fertiliser and pesticides utilised are made from farm waste, using traditional techniques. Rather ingeniously, human waste from the living quarters is also converted to bio-gas, and together with solar power, provides the energy needs of the farm.

The owner - Mr. Victor Hugo Gomes himself gave a brief introduction of the Museum . Approx. visit duration is ~ 2 hours. I was amazed to see such a widespread and rare collection dating back to several past years. We got a dedicated Tour Guide who explained on the 3 main sections of the Museum. The museum has a fair share of Local Goan History as well as from across the country specially of pre-Independence day era. The artefacts primarily covered the Transportation aspects as well as included the day-day chores not limited to the Cooking aspects, sanitization, eating habits, medical needs, recreational facilities, communication protocols, armory, fishery, plantation and agricultural aspects. They also had a Cafe but was closed due to renovation work as well as due to Covid. Think they should start that and have Light refreshments to offer . Was astonished to understand from Mr. Gomes that this was just 10% of his personal collection and wherever possible all these artefacts have been restored . Located quite close to the Colva Beach , tickets are priced at 300 each and is suitable for all age groups. It was truly a fascinating experience and to dwell into the rich history of Goa was quite enriching..

Want to see the true culture and history of Goa, beyond what the media presents then this is a must visit on your next trip. I visited Goa Chitra and all the three museums earlier in December and have been lost for words to describe my experience. This is due to level of details that Victor Hugo Gomes and his team present during the tour and story behind each artefact and item showcased here. It leaves you in awe of what was and what Victor has personally procured and preserved all these years for the people to see and relive the days bygone of the Portuguese era. The museum is a hidden jewel in the Benaulim area of South Goa and is easily accessible by road using Google maps. Finally, the museum is the best example of one man's dedication to nurturing and preserving ancestorial tools and equipment that were once a way of Goan life. Hats off to Victor and his hardworking and dedicated team.. Watch this space as Victor's got some more interesting ideas up his sleeve for us due to come up in other parts of Goa like a Marine artefacts museum and another showcasing some good ol Motorbikes of the golden era.

Not an easy find, but it's tucked amidst a serene way in the beauty lanes of goa. There are 3 museums as part of the entire experience that is guided as part of the entry fee that's Rs 300/- per person. As per your choice of language, i.e. English, hindi or goan the tour is given. The museum has various rare artefacts that date back to the 17th era, mostly from the time goa hadn't received independence. It shares the tools used for cooking, warfare, hospitals, music, and even commute. Right from the religion intricacies followed to daily means of living, customs and unknown nuances across cultures pertaining to different states of the country are displayed here. Since there is a lot to show and very little space you might find it a little cramped up but the entire guided experience is indeed fun for people who love museums and are truly inquisitive about the evolution of man and his toys across sectors. The tour is approx 45 mins for all three museums and you can go through it at ease. There is a cute cafe as well for some chilled drinks and light food. Must visit museum!
