Quiet, shady, remote, peaceful - that is Renukaji. A temple and a lake. The legend associated with it pertains to Lord Parashuram, the Sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
When Sahasrabahu, one of the then most powerful kings, killed Sage Jamdagni (father of Lord Parashuram) and his sons, his wife, Goddess Renuka hid in the reeds of Ram Kund close by. Her son, Lord Parashuram, was meditating intensely and learned of the whole incident. Through His divine powers, He restored His father, Sage Jamdagni, and his brothers to life, rescued His mother from the nearby Ram Kund, and engaged the king Sahasrabahu in battle, ultimately killing him and thereby avenging the trouble he had inflicted on His family. Lord Parashuram returned to His meditation, practising severe austerities but promised His mother to return once a year during Ekadashi in the month of Kartik (around Diwali). Thereafter, every year there is a large fair held honouring the Goddess and Her son, Lord Parashuram; on Ekadashi, 10 days after Diwali, when it is believed that He comes to visit His Mother, the Goddess Renuka.
The Ram Kund, acquired the shape of Goddess Renuka, in a reclining position (clearly visible 4 kms on the ascent to Jamu Peak). And the second lake is Parashuram Tal, symbolizing Lord Parashuram's wish to remain at His mother's feet till eternity.
Both lakes, at a little over 2000 ft, are located in the midst of thickly forested hills, and are home to a large number of fishes (1 inch hatchlings to 4 feet long fishes), turtles, bird life and are also known to attract a large number of migratory birds. Renukaji (at an easy 7 hour drive from Delhi) is approximately 100 kms. east of Ambala, through a 3 hour drive, via Shahzadpur and Narayangarh (on NH72) and crisscrossing through many villages, fields and brick kilns along the borders of Punjab and Haryana, with gentle ascent in the hills starting from Kala Amb, on to State Highways (road conditions not very good but motorable) to Nahan, Do Sarka and Dadahu (3 kms. away) containing various forest colonies and villages. Though the place is good to be visited at any time of the year, but being in the foothills, it can get warm in the summer months, with temperatures at +/- 40 degrees. The best time therefore remains the autumn and spring months. Bird life too (migratory birds) are best viewed then.
Stay option is best at HPTDC's Hotel Renukaji, with rooms bang on the banks of Lake Renukaji. Eating options too are limited and are best at the same hotel. Being a pilgrimage place, the fare is strictly vegetarian, but the Himachali cuisine at Hotel Renukaji are lip-smacking to say the least, specially after the 3-1/2 km walk around Lake Renukaji's perimeter or any of the other trails nearby such as the trek up to Jamu Peak and back, etc. The main temples of course are of Mata Renukaji, Lord Parashuram and a Dashavtar Temple. The place being small, and devotees few, the Aarti is done between the two Poojaris as per mutual consent. So if someone is particularly keen, it is best to speak to the priests beforehand.
Essential things to pack - binoculars, cameras, batteries and chargers (DON'T forget), books, pack of cards, favourite music, umbrella, a good appetite, a reverence for nature, a pair of good shoes, a resoluteness to tackle steep treks, tons of devotion and be ready to begin both the journeys; one outward and the other, within (specially with mobile signals being quite weak and internet options limited). Om Shanti Shanti Shanti. Let's stay Blessed. Sarve Santu...
