the Tabo Caves are a testament to the enduring spirit of Tibetan Buddhism.
These ancient caverns, carved into the rock face, have served as meditation retreats for monks for over a thousand years.
A Glimpse into Monastic Life Originally excavated as assembly halls, these caves later became essential for monks seeking solitude and spiritual growth during the harsh Himalayan winters. The simplicity and rugged beauty of the caves offer a unique insight into the austere lifestyle of the monastic order.
While some caves remain in use for meditation, others have been abandoned over time. Evidence of past inhabitants, such as remnants of smoke and food, can still be found in certain caves.
A Historical and Architectural Marvel The Tabo Caves are not just about their spiritual significance. They are also fascinating from an architectural standpoint. Some caves are interconnected by narrow passages, while others boast multiple rooms. Though devoid of the ornate decorations found in the monastery, the caves possess a raw charm that speaks volumes about the ingenuity and resilience of their creators.
A Tranquil Escape Beyond their historical and spiritual importance, the Tabo Caves offer a serene escape from the world. Overlooking the verdant Spiti River, these caves provide breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. A short trek from the monastery, the caves are a must-visit for those seeking peace, solitude, and a deeper connection with...
Read moreVisiting the Tabo Caves was one of the highlights of my trip to Spiti. These ancient caves are located on the hill just behind the Tabo Monastery and offer a truly unique experience. It’s a short, manageable trek — not too difficult — but you’ll definitely want to carry a bottle of water, especially during sunny days, as the altitude and dry air can tire you out quicker than expected.
The path winds gently upwards and within a few minutes, you’re already treated to spectacular views of Tabo village, the Spiti River, and the surrounding mountains. The caves themselves are fascinating — carved into the mountain, they were once used by monks for meditation and retreat. Some are small and simple, while others have multiple chambers and small windows looking out over the valley.
It’s peaceful up there, and you can really feel the calm, spiritual energy of the place. The quiet, combined with the natural beauty, makes it a great spot to just sit and reflect for a while.
If you're visiting Tabo, don’t miss the caves. It’s a perfect blend of light adventure, history, and nature — ideal for those who love exploring...

After a warm welcome we entered our luxurious room in our homestay and after getting fresh we enjoyed our dinner in the cozy dining hall with tasty local cuisine along with warm hospitality of members of our homestay followed by a sweet sleep. Next day i.e. on 28th. of June, 2022 after having morning tea we started to explore Tabo caves by foot through stairs & steep slopes from where we could view the panoramic view of Tabo village and could take beautiful photographs. Some of these caves are even multi-storeyed and there has a small temple and a hall like chamber where prayers and other rituals were performed. A small kitchen attached to this mud cave is where monks used to cook their food. Everyone must visit this place to explore the ancient history of monks &...
