Baba Budangiri is a sacred pilgrimage spot in Chikmagalur for both the Hindu and Muslim communities. It is famous for its shrine of Hazrat Dada Hayath Mir Khalander who was a 17th century Sufi saint. The place is also notable for the caves which are believed to be once the residence of Sri Dattatreya Swamy. Baba Budangiri is one of the most picturesque places to visit in Chikmagalur and also famous among the thrill seekers for its trekking and hiking opportunities. Bababudangiri is an amazing trek in the mountains of Chikmagalur, located at a distance of 250 km from Bangalore, making it ideal for a weekend getaway. Starting on the hiking trail from Sarpadhari (alternatively from Attinagundi), you can see the peaks of Budangiri (1895 m) and Mullayanagiri (1930 m) looming at a distance. Together, the two mountains appear like a crescent moon, therefore known as the Chandra Drona Range. Baba Budangiri Temple The Baba Budangiri shrine is important to both Hindus and Muslims. You will find the grave of Baba Budan- the Sufi saint, after trekking to the flat top of hill. From the Dargah of the islamic saint, a stairwell rises up to the Dattatreya Caves- believed to be inhabited by the hindu deity Dattatreya Swami. Fascinating stories associated with these mythical figures circulate among pilgrims here. The Islamic saint is known to have been sent by the Prophet Muhamamd to India and the deity Dattatreya is believed to be the embodiment of Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshwar. You will be thrilled to hear about a peculiar connection between coffee plantations in the Nilgiri Hills and the Sufi saint coming from faraway Middle-east. Legend has it, the saint had returned from his Hajj to Mecca with seven raw cocoa beans which he planted in the soils of these mountainsides! A sweeping view of the Chikmagalur valley from the shrine can be found down below. 3 km ahead of the religious site, the Manikyadhara Falls is another brilliantly scenic place that you can check out. Baba Budangiri Trek The Baba Budangiri trek has two viable flag-off points, the trailhead at Sarpadhari and the one at Attigundi. Going by any of the routes, trekkers will first reach the Mullayanagiri mountain-- the highest peak in Karnataka and furthering from here to Baba Budangiri. The trail will demand you to carefully negotiate steep uphill stretches and walking on a moraine-filled ravine. The block cliffs of Mullayanagiri soon comes into sight after crossing Sarpadhari, surrounded by thickets of shola trees. The enthusiastic shutterbug in you has to jump to life on finding the striking contrast of resplendent green forests, and grasslands against the black rocked cliffs on this trail. Upon reaching the mountain-top, you will be greeted with a spellbinding birds-eye view of the valley lying below.

Baba Budan giri (BB Hills) | Chandradrona Parvatha | Dattatray Peeta This is a beautiful mountain range of the Western Ghats. We mainly went to see Neelakurinji which had bloomed in this range during the 2022 season. There are 2 deviations on the hill station - one takes you to Mullayanagiri and Seethalayanagiri and the other takes you to the BB hills. On the way to BB hills, you will first come across Honnammana Halla falls. You could see this from your vehicle itself. After this, you will come to a spot from where it will lead you to Jhari falls. You will need to board a jeep (queue basis, first come first serve) to go to Jhari falls (about 3 km inside). You can also walk to the falls if you can. Not sure if private vehicles are allowed. As you proceed, you will reach the place where the mosque and temple are there. Park your vehicle and get down a few steps to reach there. After the darshan climb back to the car parking area and from here again you will have 2 deviations - one to Ghalikere and another one to Mankiyadara falls. We went during weekends and especially during Neelakurinji flower time hence it was overcrowded. To go to Mankiyadhara falls (not a great fall though), we were asked to take a jeep (not sure if you can by your vehicle itself or maybe if it is a small car they might allow since the roads are too narrow) which again takes you to a higher level and on the way to Mankiyadhara falls is where Neelakurinji was there. The entire mountain range was painted in purple-blue hues. You will be dropped close to the falls and to reach the falls again you need to get down by a few steps to see it. On the way, there are jaw-dropping viewpoints that are difficult to miss. Once you see the falls, walk and come to the Neelakurinji meadows - an extremely beautiful sight to behold. Once done, take the jeep (you can take any empty jeep) and return to the parking area. Jeep charges were overpriced maybe due to peak flowering season but it is worth seeing the scenic beauty!!! The best part of the journey is to enjoy the scenic road trip! Western Ghats section is very scenic and beautiful. On the hill station, food options are limited to just snacks. For meals as such pack your own food. Better avoid on weekends as the traffic was moving at a snail's pace. And since the hill station roads are extremely narrow it feels too jammed and you will be stressed out driving the vehicle. If you are still visiting on weekends, do not plan to stay in the city. Better book hotels/homestays that are available on the hill station.

Beautiful view around it surrounded by beautiful photoshoot zone Z-point. This place has a vast history for it, one side its religious place for Muslims and religious for Hindus too since Datta Peetha is not far from here. Actually Datta Peetha and Baba samadhi is inside one single Cave. But the interesting fact is even though two religious beliefs in there the inside vibe looks like more the place belongs to the Lord Dattatreya since the culture here they follow is lighting the lamp and breaking the nut which is usually done in Hindu culture. Rest aside the place is so beautiful ideal time to visit is evening 4.30 and can spend some 2 hours there near Z-point. But only the negative is the location which Google map is showing is incorrect and if you follow the map then you will land in Manikyadhara falls which is in the top from Baba Budan Giri and need to drive for around 8 to 10 kms from here. So, better ask the locals there and reach the right spot to view Baba Budan Giri.
