The presiding goddess of the Karnataka city of Ballari is known as Ballari Kanaka Durgamma. The name of this Goddess is thought to have inspired the name of the city.
It is said that Arjuna built the shrine to honour Goddess Durga. After ascending a winding ghat path to get to the temple, there are a few steps to climb in order to get to the main temple. The localites of Bellary and worshippers regard the large moorthi of Goddess Durga inside to be extremely potent and assert that she grants all of your wishes because it is Svayambhu (self manifested).
The goddess Durga's eight-armed manifestation known as the "moorthi" is the pinnacle of beauty as she stands above the demon Mahishashura and pierces him with her trident. Some followers view taking a dip in the Krishna River as a sacred practise.
Festival: The temple is very important spiritually and draws many visitors all year long, but especially during the Navaratris and Dusshera, which gathers tens of thousands of worshippers. Durgamma Sidi is another great festival observed here.
