Pataleshwara Temple, located in Talakadu, is one of the five sacred Pancha Linga temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple stands out for its spiritual importance and the mystery surrounding it. The term "Patala" means "underground" or "netherworld," and the temple is believed to be deeply connected to the subterranean energies and legends of the region.
I visited this site as part of the KSRTC Gaganachukki package from Bangalore. Our guide gave us fascinating insights into the history — especially the legend of Queen Alamelamma’s curse, which led to several temples in Talakadu, including Pataleshwara, getting buried under sand dunes over the centuries.
Some parts of the temple remain completely submerged under sand, giving it a surreal and mysterious vibe. The guide also explained the strong connection between this temple and the Mysore royal family, and how the entire Talakadu region holds deep mythological and historical relevance.

I booked a cab from Utaxi who took 3000/- from Bangalore for a Tata Indica AC car. The trip included Talakadu temple, kaveri river bank, Shivanasamudram falls and temple. Overall it was a nice experience. You can take a guide in the talakadu temple who will take 200/- and explain you all the details. There are 5 temples in the area. Most of the people don't realise it and end up seeing just one.
Best time to visit -- During July-August if you want to enjoy the beauty of shivanasamudram waterfall.
