Read moreHorrible experience. Never heading out in that part of Karnataka again.
There were some folks who got stuck in the rocks up on the peak. Nobody knew exactly why. The fire station/rescue responsible for Savanadurga were called. While carrying rescue gear to the peak, they proceeded to assault and hit the trekkers they met on their way up, who were only minding their own business and not disturbing rescue operations.
I was just walking down, and one of the fire station officers called me, asked my name, and then hit me on the back of my head. Another officer in a white uniform did the same. These blows were pretty hard and hurt a lot. I feel sorry for the families of these officers and wish that nobody ever goes here. When i tried talking about this to the fire station officer stationed at the base of the mountain, one old village lady told me that it's our own fault that we were here in the evening. It was 5.30 pm and the sun was up till 6.45 pm.
Another trekker said he smelled alcohol on the officers.
While I have had an awesome experience staying in Bangalore, and the state officers have been super nice, this incident will make me think twice about trusting them.
In all, please avoid Savanadurga. Not worth it. There are plenty of excellent mountains nearby. If you do get in trouble, please call a lawyer or a good contact before contacting the fire brigade for help. They are not to be trusted. Unprofessional and...
Read moreThe fort of way is dangerous for real, but it comes with a choice. Savandurga is the largest monolith in Asia, its the rock climbers and trekkers paradise. Its called fort of death because of the inclination on the rock, making it difficult to climb. There are many routes to reach this place, we chose via Dodda Aaladamara (That's Big Banyan Tree). On Mysore road take diversion on right to reach Big Banyan tree, continue to reach the beautiful Manchanbele Dam aka MB Dam, further with tricky roads it leads to Savandurga. Its amidst forest region, at the bottom there is old a Narasimha Swamy temple, on foot way continuing from temple it leads to the rocks. The Main rock is split into two the white rock and the black rock due to ageing. One of the trek route inclination is up to 70 degrees other moderately difficult, but inclination is trek able. We tried the 70 degree route ending with torn shoes, some villagers climb with bare foot on this route!! It takes lot of energy to climb this route we were accompanied with drizzling rain. There is Anjaneya temple on the way with many old fort ruins, mostly built during Kempe Gowda's reign. With lot of excitment and fun we reached the peak of the monolith, the view from here is worth climbing and the zephyr was soothing. There is a old Nandi temple with a huge bell which adds to the peaceful...
