Kudli (Koodli) is a small place with less than 5000 population. However this is a place with lot of religious importance and one of the lesser known places. The place is famous for "sangama" (sangama means join or union) of Tunga and Bhadra river. Both these rivers are born on either side of Kudremukh hill ranges along the western ghats. Tunga river travels in Thirthahalli taluk and enters Shimoga. Just before Shimoga, Tunga has a dam at Gajanur. The Tunga water is supposed to be best for drinking. This water is sweet in taste. "Tunga paana" and "Ganga Snana" is a proverb which means, Tunga water is good for drinking and Ganga water is sacred for bath. The Tunga dam water is channelled to North Karnataka region through channels. The Bhadra river travels in Bhadravathi Taluk and has a dam near Lakkavalli, which is also close to Shimoga. This dam is also supplied water to irrigation in the area. The Bhadra river gets polluted with the wastage of SAIL iron & Steel factory wastage. Both Tunga and Bhadra join at Kudli and form Tungabhadra river which further travels thousands of Kilometer before joining the sea in Bay of Bengal. The Tungabhadra dam at Hospet is also one of the biggest dams. Sri Mantralayam a religious place is located on the banks of Tungabhadra. Kudli, the sangama is supposed to be sacred for all saints. It has Sri Kudli arya Akshobhyathirtha mutt of Vaishnavas and also Sri kudli Sringeri mutt of Smarthas. All peethadhipathis or erstwhile swamijis of Akshobhyathirtha mutt are buried here. All Vrindavans (samadhis) are in one place next to Narasimha temple. Similarly all Brindavans of Sri kudli Sringeri mutt gurus are also in one place close to sangama. The Shiva temple built by Hoysalas have been taken over by Archeological Survey of India. The Narasimha temple is very ancient temple. The Sringeri mutt has Sharada temple which is located in the beginning. Sri Rameswara temple is also very ancient but neglected temple. The maintenance and upkeep of this place is not satisfactory considering the importance. The village housedmany sanskrit scholars of bhats. Due to neglect of the place and tradition by the government the religious scholars have migrated. The Kudli Akshobhyathirtha mutt provides daily annadanams to their mutt devotees. There is no good hotel in the vicinity. The only way to reach Kudli is from Shimoga. Shimoga has rail head and also well connected by KSRTC buses. Kudli is 18 kms from Shimoga. You have to get down at Kudli cross and take a auto or hire taxi/auto from Shimoga itself. The scenery during rainy season is beautiful. You can see Bhairaveswara betta from the sangama. Most of the devotees visiting the place take bath at the sangama. However it is advised not to venture in to the river during rainy season. There is stone temple (small one) of Shiva at the exact place where both the rivers meet. It is totally of stone and gets submerged during rainy season. During summer the river has knee deep water and is good for picnic with families. The sangama is also famous for religious practises of immersion of ashes of the dead. Hence you may see few families performing immersion of ashes. Though there is no decent place to stay in Kudli, the mutt provides basic room facilities for devotees. The nearest town is Holehonnur at a distance of 3kms , which houses the Brindavan of Sri Sathyadharma Swamy well known amongst Uttaradi mutt devotees of Madhwas. The Bhairaveswara temple is located on a hillock and a road exists for cars to go upto the temple. A days sight seeing with religious trip can combine all these places. A visit to Ranganatha temple at Pillangeri (Between Shimoga and Kudli) can also...

It was so beautiful to see both waters merging into one and becoming Tungabhadra! Old temples are worth seeing. Sharada Temple is newly built. Two Matas for Smarthas and Vaishnavas are there. We have to inform earlier for meals. Hence better to carry food.
