Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is the first and one of the most renowned bird sanctuaries in Kerala, located in the Ernakulam district near Kothamangalam. Spanning approximately 25 square kilometers along the Periyar River, this sanctuary was established in 1983 following the recommendations of the legendary Indian ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, often referred to as the “Birdman of India.” Dr. Ali described Thattekad as "the richest bird habitat on peninsular India," reflecting the extraordinary biodiversity and avian wealth of the region.

Location and Landscape Situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary sits between an altitude range from around 35 to 488 meters. The sanctuary features a variety of habitats, including tropical evergreen forests, semi-evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests, marshy lands, and the backwaters formed by the Bhoothathankettu Irrigation Dam. The sanctuary’s terrain comprises undulating hills, rocky outcrops, and dense forest cover, creating a remarkable ecological mosaic that supports a wide array of avian and animal life.

Biodiversity and Birdlife Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is home to over 300 species of birds, comprising both resident and migratory species. It provides shelter and breeding grounds for diverse bird species including forest birds and water birds. Some notable birds frequently sighted here are the Indian pitta, Oriental dwarf kingfisher, Malabar grey hornbill, Indian hawk cuckoo, large-billed leaf-warbler, orange-headed thrush, and white-bellied treepie.

The region known as "Cuckoo Paradise" is home to various cuckoo species like the drongo cuckoo, Indian hawk cuckoo, and the large hawk cuckoo. The sanctuary is especially popular among birdwatchers and photographers for its exotic and rare bird species like the Ceylon frogmouth and Sri Lanka frogmouth, which are endemic to the area.

In addition to birds, the sanctuary hosts around 34 species of mammals, including the Indian giant squirrel, Nilgiri langur, and elephant. Reptiles, amphibians, and fishes also thrive in the area, such as the Asian emerald dove and brown-backed needletails.

Activities and Visitor Experience Visitors to Thattekad Bird Sanctuary can engage in guided birdwatching tours, nature walks, and photography sessions. The sanctuary’s diverse network of trails, watchtowers, and observation points offer excellent vantage points for spotting birds and enjoying the stunning natural surroundings. Boating on the Periyar River is another popular activity providing close observations of aquatic and water bird species.

The best months to visit are from October to February when the weather is pleasant and bird activity is high. The sanctuary experiences heavy monsoons between May and July, during which access can be difficult.

Conservation and Significance Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is not only a bird haven but also a vital ecosystem for environmental conservation. The sanctuary plays a key role in protecting Kerala’s natural heritage by preserving important forest and wetland habitats. It also supports environmental education and awareness among visitors.

Accessibility The sanctuary is located about 12 kilometers from Kothamangalam and approximately 65 kilometers from Kochi city, making it accessible by road from major cities in Kerala. The Cochin International Airport and Ernakulam railway station are the nearest major...

Inviting bird lovers and nature enthusiasts alike, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is Kerala’s very first bird sanctuary. In 1983, the 25-sqkm area in Thattekad was declared a sanctuary. Earlier, in the same year, the legendary ‘Bird Man of India’ Dr. Salim Ali had surveyed Thattekkad, and called it the richest bird habitat he had ever seen. There are 284 species of birds that have been recorded at the sanctuary.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is located to the north of the Periyar River, at the foot of the mighty Western Ghats. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between October and March. The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport, and the nearest railway station is at Aluva.

It was Dr. Salim Ali who first recognised the avifaunal richness of Thattekkad Forest during his Travancore Cochin Ornithological survey during 1983. As recommended by Dr. Salim Ali, in 1983 an area of 25.16 Sq. Km. at Thattekkad was notified as Kerala’s first Tropical bird sanctuary. The area is a part of western Ghats, on its western slope and almost at the base of the highest peak Anamudi 2695 m above msl.

Habitat diversity and topographical position of the area is the main reason to make it bird rich. 322 species of birds including long distance migratory ones comprise the avifaunal world of Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary.

An extent of one kilometre around the boundary of Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary has been notified as its eco-sensitive zone (EZ).

The EZ, according to the draft notification published by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, will cover an area of 28.444 sq.km. Some parts of the Kuttampuzha and Keerampara villages will fall within the EZ of the sanctuary, according to the notification.

An area of 25.16 sq. km, lying on the northern bank of River Periyar, was declared as the bird sanctuary by the Government of Kerala in 1983, considering its ecological, faunal, floral, natural and zoological significance. The Thattekkad sanctuary is also the first bird sanctuary in Kerala and is considered a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers with a wide variety of flora and fauna. For bird enthusiasts, this sanctuary is a must-visit, offering a chance to observe a wide variety of bird species in their natural habitats. The sanctuary is divided into different areas where specific bird species can be found, making it essential to take guided treks to explore these locations. Visitors are not permitted to enter these areas without a guide, ensuring both safety and environmental protection. The guided trek costs Rs. 200 per person, and the experience typically spans three days, allowing ample time to explore multiple areas. Treks begin as early as 4 or 5 AM to catch the birds at their most active times, making it a thrilling and immersive experience. The sanctuary, surrounded by a thick forest, is also home to elephants. Elephants sometimes cross into these bird habitats, knocking down electric fences in the process. The forest department closely monitors animal activity and will advise tourists of any potential risks. Treks may occasionally be paused or stopped for safety reasons when elephants or other wildlife are active. The best time to visit is from October to May, avoiding the monsoon season, which lasts from June to early September. Accommodation is available on the periphery of the sanctuary, with several reasonable options, though booking in advance is recommended. Food options are limited, and there are no star-rated hotels nearby. Parking facilities are available for around 50 vehicles near the sanctuary office. For a nature lover or bird watcher, this sanctuary offers a rewarding experience worth the effort.
