Thavanur Sree Brahma Temple — Attraction in Kerala

Ignored by the ignorance and idiocy of Hindus, the modern purogamana Hindus who are lead and poisoned by communist ideology and congress arrogance has lead to the decay of this temple and the new middle East religious growth in this region is strong and aggressive. The lack of knowledge and faith of Hindus and laziness has lead to it's decay. But still coz of few Proud Hindus, cultured Hindus are doing good to maintain this Temple.

Thavanoor Brahma temple is the only one that has four faced Brahma as idol. The temple situated in Thavanoor Panchayath of Ponnani Thalook, Malappuram district is entangled with myths and history. I visited this temple for the first time in 1993. What I saw then was an afforested temple and huge granite logs.

At the time of Mysorean invasion, like a lot of other temples in Thavanoor, Brahma temple was also attacked. The money and ornaments were looted. The idols were destroyed. A Siva temple 100 meters west to the Brahma temple was demolished. The Othaanmaar Madom towards the north of this was also demolished. Namboothiri of Thavanoor Vellamana, who was for sure an advisor of Kozhikode Samoothiri Raja, was a witness for Hyder’s attack and atrocities to the city. The book “Vellayude Charithram” is written documentation done by this man who has all these incidents incorporated. This has been a great document of history. Hyderali’s invasion has been documented by Vella Namboothiri as follows:

“നവ ബ് കോയമ്പത്തൂർ ചെന്നിരുന്ന് കോയമ്പത്തൂർ ഇരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഈ രാജ്യം യുദ്ധം ചെയ്താൽ കിട്ടുമെന്നു വെച്ച് (ഹൈദരാലി പടയോട്ടം നടത്തി ആധിപത്യം സ്ഥാപിച്ച നാടുകൾ തിരിച്ചുപിടിക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമം -തിരൂർ ദിനേശ് ) പുതിയ കോവിലകത്തെ ഒരു രാജാവ് ഏതാനും ആളുകളെ കൂട്ടിയുമ്പം ചെയ്യാൻ തുടങ്ങിയാ റെ അവര് ഓരോരോ ദിക്ക് ഒഴിച്ചു. പിന്നെ, മാദണ്ഡൻ തിരുന്നാവായെ ആകുന്നു. അവിടേയും യുദ്ധം തുടങ്ങി. അപ്പോൾ അവര് അമ്പലത്തിലും കോവിലകത്തും അടച്ചു പാർത്തതേയുള്ളു. യുദ്ധം ചെയ്കയുമുണ്ട്. ചൊനകര ഒക്കയും ആസ്ഥയായ ഏറ്റു. അന്ന് പിന്നെ  കാളാട്ട് ഗോപാലൻ എന്ന പിഷാരടി പൊന്നാനി വായ്കൽ തലശ്ശേന്നവരായി കൽപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. അയാളു കൂടിയുണ്ട്. ഈ യവസ്ഥ കോയമ്പത്തൂര് കെട്ടിട നവാസും വലിയ പാളയവും പുറപ്പെട്ട് വേഗേന വന്നപ്പോൾ ബൗദ്ധൻമാരും തെക്കെ കര വന്ന് ഏറ്റു .പ്രഭുക്കൻമാരും പുരുഷാരവും അവിടെയാകുന്നു. അവിടെച്ചെന്ന് ഏറ്റപ്പോൾ അവരെല്ലാവരും ഒഴിച്ചു പോയി. നവാബും പുരുഷാരവും വെള്ളനാട്ടുകയും വന്ന് പെൺ പിള്ളയേയും ബ്രാഹ്മണരേയും കണ്ടവരെ പിടിച്ച് കൊണ്ട് പോകയും ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും ഭവനങ്ങളും ചൂടുകയും പലരേയും തൂക്കുകയും വെട്ടിക്കൊല്ലുകയും ചെയ്തു. പിന്നെ, തിരുന്നാവായ വടക്കെക്കരെ നവാബും പാളയവും വന്നിരുന്നു. തെക്കെക്കരെ കണ്ണൂക്കാര് മാപ്പിളമാരും മറ്റുള്ളവരിൽ പലരും കൂടി ഈ ദിക്കിലുള്ള ഭവനങ്ങളും ഓത്താൻ മാരുടെ മഠവും ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു പന്തി ചുടുകയും ചെയ്തു. വെട്ടത്തു നാട്ടിൽ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും ഇല്ലങ്ങളും ഭവനങ്ങളും ചുടുകയും ബിംബ ഹാനി ഒരു പന്തി എല്ലാടവും വെട്ടത്തു നാട്ടിൽ വിശേഷിച്ച് പലരേയും തൊപ്പി ഇ ടീക്കയും ചെയ്തു. പിന്നെ ഒരു പന്തി ഒക്കയും ഓരോരോ വഴിക്ക് പുറപ്പെട്ട് പോകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു കലശല് മുമ്പ് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല എന്നേ പറയാവൂ. ആപത്ത് ഇതിൽപ്പരം വരാനില്ലല്ലോ. വിശേഷിച്ച് തിരുന്നാവായെ ഗോപുരങ്ങളും ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും ഒക്കയും  ചുടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇങ്ങനെ അവസ്ഥ.”

From the descriptions of Vella Namboothiri, towards the south of Bharathapuzha attackers from Hyder Ali’s army are mostly Kannur Muslims. Thavanoor is exactly at the south of Thriunavaya. Vella has not mentioned about the temples which has been attacked. It has been clearly mentioned that Othanmaar Madom was set on fire. Vella had mentioned this clearly because this was an important spot for Brahmins then. We have to go through the myths and history of the Brahma Temple before checking the current situation. This will enlighten us with the myths about the origin of Bharathapuzha, Trimoorthy temple and Mamaangam...

The only Brahma temple in Kerala! Such an old and sacred place…..you find eternal peace….no words really. Me and my wife drove all the way from Ernakulam to see Lord Brahma in all his glory.

Unfortunately, the temple lacks funds even for maintenance as it is quite difficult to access as roads and neighbouring compounds are owned by a Muslims. It is quite obvious they are trying to choke the temple out!!

The temple is under renovation as of now. Its located in a very calm n beautiful atmosphere. It's the only Brahma temple in Kerala and the other is in Pushkar, Rajasthan. It's believed that a devotee who visit all the Thrimurthi's temple the same day receives immense blessings.
