Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid is one of the oldest and most beautiful mosques in Kerala, over 1,000 years old. Built in traditional Kerala wooden architecture, with carved pillars, wooden ceilings, and a serene courtyard, it is a true heritage monument. The mosque stands on the banks of the Meenachil River, offering a peaceful atmosphere for prayer and reflection. Visitors are always impressed by its craftsmanship and history. A must-visit spot in Kottayam for those interested in culture, architecture, and spirituality.

Thazhathangady a suburban area of District Kottayam Kerala India. I stayed in Kottayam for 7 days and during my stay I could access this more than1000 years second oldest active mosque which is situated in this suburban area on the bank of Meenachil river.

First mosque is Cheraman Juma Masjid which was built during the Holy lifetime of Holy Prophet Mohammed Peace be upon him. As after Cheraman Perumal who embraced Islam and he couldn't return to Kerala on his behalf Malik Bin Dinar Almighty's Pleasure for Him a companion of Prophet pbuh and a preacher of Islam landed in Kochi and this mosque was constructed.

Thazhathangady Juma Masjid was built after this mosque. As many people they have embraced Islam in other parts of Kerala after the understanding of the Holy teachings of Holy Prophet pbuh and they settled here. This mosque is an excellent example of Kerala's Architecture. Still it's fascinating the tourits and believers. This mosque was built by Muslims with their own funds.  Timber was mainly used in the construction of this mosque. It is very beautiful and attractive. Beautiful carving on wood is amazing. The Main Mihrab and Member in the prayer hall are very beautiful. Quranic Ayats are also mentioned. Very attractive water tank for ablution is made adjacent to the mosque. We were blessed to offer the prayer and this main prayer hall is preserved and new additions were added towards the eastern side. It's a renowned heritage and active place of Worship.

Half an hour is enough to visit this mosque and the nearest attraction to the mosque is Mozart Art Gallery. It's a major attraction among the history buffs wanderers soulseekers art and...

THAZHATHANGADY JUMA MASJID

It is believed that Islam started and spreading the Old Kottayam from 7th century A.D. This area was one of the early Muslim centres in Kerala. Before the era of the Prophet Mohammed, Arabs had already arrived here. They were very pious and were strict followers of their tradition and religious practices. These wealthy overseas traders temporarily resided in this place. These Arab traders married local women from the early days. This is quite clear from masterpiece literature works like “Thuhfathul Mujahideen”and also from the works of Ibn Battutta and Sulaiman. It was the Islamic Missionary Malik Bin Dinar, who during the era of Prophet Mohammed had come to India, established about eleven mosques in Kerala and Tamilnadu and personally contributed to the growth of Islam. A section of the Thazhathangadi residents influenced by the Arabic culture embraced Islam. Malik Bin Habib, nephew of Malik Bin Dinar, had a major role in the establishment of mosques from Kodungalloor to Kollam. The missionaries, who accompanied him, led the prayers at these mosques in the early days. The Missionary, Sheikh Ahmed, was the first Khasi of the world famous Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid. This religious monument is estimated to be about 1200 years old.

This magnificent religious monument, built in a style blending the contemporary Kerala style and the Arabic classic design is a proud symbol of the Muslim heritage in...
