Ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Sree Krishna located on the top of a huge Black Granite Rock. Therefore locally this Temple is known as Parahkovil. Due to this historical temple the place derived its name : Thirumala, literally meaning "Holy Hill" in Malayalam.
Numerous legends and myths about the temple exist. Temple is believed to be constructed by Pancha Pandavas. Presence of Manipara (Bell Rock) and Theerthakulam (Holy Spring on the top of the rock) adds strength to the myths and legends. Archaeologically this temple is believed to be constructed about 5000 years back. Temple is completely constructed of Black Granite rock. According to the Stone inscriptions found in the temple, renovation of the temple was performed by the Founder of Modern Travancore, Sree Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, while taking a huge rock from the hill for the Purpose of constructing Ottakal Mandalam in Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple.
