Aamakkallu as the name implies is a huge rock resembling the shape of a tortoise. It is located in a higher peak on a the left side of the Thookkupalam – Ramakkalmedu route. Even though it is very near to Ramakkalmedu, the well known tourist spot, it is virtually impossible to reach the peak from there. The best method to reach Aamakkallu is by an off-road jeep ride from Thovalappady. You can hire a jeep driven by expert drivers. 4X4 Mahindra Jeeps will take you through nearly 45 degree inclined off-roads.The panoramic view of vast areas of low lying Tamilnadu farms and scattered wind mills all around is a beautiful sight. Aamakkallu comprises of two huge rocks which is separated by a vertical crack running through out the width of the rock. The width of the crack or the separation between the rocks is just 25 to 30 cms. If you are not a fat, you will be able to move side wise through the fissure. Move ahead for around 25 feet to reach the other side of the rock. Real view of the Aamakkallu can be obtained only if you reach the other side through...

😊 Unique rock formation resembling a tortoise shell 😊 We can go inside – narrow entrance opens up inside 😊 Need to bend or crawl to enter through narrow passage 😊 Surprisingly spacious and cool interior once inside 😊 History 😊 😊Formed during Ramayana era – over 5 lakh years ago 😊 Believed to be a shelter for Lord Hanuman's army 😊 Local tribes consider it sacred – Lord Shiva temple inside 😊 Also believed to be a watchtower for ancient Kerala kings 😊 Geological history: formed from sea bed through erosion 😊 Formed over 1 crore years ago – a natural wonder 😊 Once a sea bed – fossils of sea creatures still found 😊 Over time, sea receded and rock formed through erosion 😊 Locals believe it was a shelter for tribals centuries ago ⚠️ Jeep Safari available nearby – highly recommended 😊 😊 1800rsfor a thrilling off-road ride 😊 Experienced drivers take you through...

Aamapaara (Tortoise Rock) is a location where you can do some funny adventurous activity. We consider its almost safe as well with out much danger. Still remember there will be moderate risk in any adventures. Drive to Ramakkal medu which is about 30 kms from Kumily and once you reach there, you can park your vehicle there and hire a 4 wheel drive jeep for off road drive Rs 1300 is the rate per jeep as of Jan 2022. And its managed by DTPC, Idukki. All drivers there are local people and they seems to be quite friendly and also are good guides through this location. The off road drive is thrilling and entertaining but you need to be physicaly fit. Once you are at Aamapara, you need to pass through the narrow gaps of huge rocks somehow and thats the interesting part of it. And the view from here is beyond words. ❀
