The mysteries of this city will enthrall you with its every nook and cranny. Sometimes, all you need to do is get up and start walking. North Calcutta, is mesmerizing. Every lane holds a story, a history. One such place that can offer treasures to the city lovers is Belgachia.

Right where you step out of the metro station, you will find a very shabby shade of the city. Crowded, clumsy, with herds of auto rickshaws flocking around. Here, do not get disappointed, for behind the humdrum affairs lies a giant myriad of history and memories. The Belgachia Rajbari, also known as the Paikpara Rajbari stands there to astound you and take you on a walk along the vivid history painted on it.

Right behind the auto stand, you will find the gates of the mansion. As you enter, the huge portico and wide staircase welcomes you to witness its glorious past that has almost come to the verge of extinction. The building, initially a property of Lord Auckland was purchased by Prince Dwarakanath Tagore around 1823. It was redesigned in accordance with European architecture and became a pivotal place to entertain the British.

The mansion had a beautiful garden and a lake, also known as ‘Moti Jheel’, during the time of its pomp. This place gradually became a favourite spot of the Englishmen who used to be hosted by Prince Dwarakanath Tagore. Frequent parties, opera and dance parties used to be organised here with the best food and drinks. After the death of Prince Dwarakanath Tagore, the Tagore family had to sell off the villa in order to meet their debts. Since then, the Belgachia Rajbari became home of the Sinhas, the first owner being Raja Pratap Chandra Sinha Bahadur of Kandi.

As you enter the hall way into the stairway, you will find beautiful European sculptures along the railings of the staircase leading to the first floor of the mansion. A huge painting of one of the eminent Rajas of the Sinha Family hangs on the wall along the staircase.

The ceiling contains glass patchwork, clearly showing evidence of Western Architectural influence. On the left of the staircase, on the first floor, lies a passage leading to the balcony with rooms on...
