We reached Mandav from Maheshwar by 5 p.m. and went straight to Rani Rupmati Palace. There was not much time left and we had paid INR 25/vistor at the gate that covered this Palace and Palace of Baaz Bahadur.
There was a long zigzag ramp to be scaled to reach the Palace and we availed the service of an interesting, knowledgeable and entertaining guide, Yashvant. He took us to the top and made us sit inside and narrated the saga behind the Palace.
It was actually constructed by ancestors of Raja Bhoj as an Army Post where horses were kept and a close watch was kept to safeguard territories from the enemies. Baaz Bahadur, General of Akbar also used it for the same purpose until he captured Rani Rupmati and fell in love with her vocal music skills and matchless beauty.
It is believed that she never used to consume even a droplet of water without paying reverence to Maa Narmada and if one looks from the top of this Palace, Maa Narmada is visible at a distance. The Palace has rainwater filtering and storage mechanism which is unoperational and there is a passage which is believed to be secret passage for Rani Rupmati to take royal cart toBaaz Bahadur's Palace.
The views from the top are breathtaking and sunset is just incredible to be watched from here. The garden at the top is well-manicured and fully blossoming. The Palace and the passages are well-maintained and kept clean. One may capture incredible images as timeless memories.
A must visit to walk the...
