लोणावळ्याच्या डोंगररांगेत उगम पावणार्‍या मुळा नदीवर मुळशी धरण बांधलेले आहे. या मुळा नदिच्या खोर्‍यावर तसेच पुण्याहून ताम्हणी मार्गे कोकणात उतरणार्‍या घाटमार्गावर लक्ष ठेवण्यासाठी कैलासगड किल्ल्याची निर्मिती करण्यात आली होती. किल्ल्याच स्थान आणि आकार पाहाता हा टेहळणीचा किल्ला होता. लोणावळ्याहून भुशी डॅम, INS शिवाजीला जाणार्‍या रस्त्याने पेठ शहापूर - भांबुर्डे - मार्गे पुढे जात असतांना भांबुर्डेच्या पुढे उजव्या बाजूला डोंगररांग तर डाव्या बाजूला मुळशी धरणाच्या पाण्याचा फ़ुगवटा आपली साथ संगत करत असतो. या डोंगररांगेत सवाष्णी घाटावर लक्ष ठेवणारे तैलबैला, घनगड हे किल्ले आहेत. याच रस्त्यावर असलेल्या वडुस्ते गावाच्या पुढे कैलासगड किल्ला आहे. मुंबई आणि पुण्याहून हा किल्ला एका दिवसात पाहाता येतो.

पहाण्याची ठिकाणे लोणावळ्याहून वडुस्ते गावात पोहोचल्यावर, तोच रस्ता पुढे ताम्हणी घाट आणि मुळशी मार्गे पुण्याकडे जातो. या रस्त्याने एक किलोमीटरवर एक खिंड आहे. या खिंडीत डाव्या बाजूला म्हणजेच धरणाच्या बाजूला एक ट्रान्सफ़ॉर्मर आहे. तर उजव्या बाजूला कैलासगड असलेल्या डोंगराची धार खाली उतरलेली आहे. या ठिकाणी किल्ले कैलासगड उर्फ़ घोडमांजरीचा डोंगर अशी पाटी लावलेली आहे. या टेकडीवर जाणार्‍या मळलेल्या पायवटेने आपण १५ मिनिटात टेकडीच्या माथ्यावर पोहोचतो. येथून मुळशी धरणाच्या पाण्याचा फ़ुगवटा व्यवस्थित दिसतो. पुढे असलेली दुसरी टेकडी थेट किल्ल्याच्या डोंगराला भिडलेली आहे. हि टेकडी उजवीकडे आणि दरी डावीकडे ठेवत १५ मिनिटात आपण टेकडीच्या माथ्यावर पोहोचतो.

टेकडी जिथे संपते तिथे किल्ल्याच्या डोंगराचा सरळसोट कडा खाली उतरलेला आहे. त्यामुळे किल्ल्याचा डोंगराला वळसा घालून डोंगर उजवीकडे आणि दरी डावीकडे ठेवत १५ मिनिटात आपण किल्ल्याच्या माथ्यावर पोहोचतो. येथे उजव्या बाजूला पठार आहे. त्यावर एक भगवा झेंडा लावलेला आहे. या पठारावरून दूरवरचा प्रदेश दृष्टीक्षेपात येतो. पठाराच्या विरुध्द बाजूला एक छोट टेकाड आहे. त्यावर चढण्यापूर्वी डाव्या बाजूला एक खाली उतरणारी पायवाट दिसते. या अवधड वाटेने ५ मिनिटे उतरल्यावर आपण कातळात खोदलेल्या गुहा टाक्यापाशी पोहोचतो. या टाक्यात खांब खोदण्याचे प्रयत्न केलेले दिसतात. पण दगड ठिसूळ लागल्याने काम अर्धवट सोडले असावे.

टाक पाहून परत पठारावर येऊन डावीकडच्या टेकाडावर चढून गेल्यावर उध्वस्त घरांचे काही चौथरे पाहायला मिळतात. पुढे किल्ल्याच्या टोकाकडे जातांना डाव्या बाजूला एक दगडांची भिंत घातलेली दिसते. त्याच्या आत कातळावर कोरलेल षिवलोंग आहे. इथे आपली गड प्रदक्षिणा संपते. येथे आपल्याकडे दोन पर्याय असतात. आल्य मार्गाने खिंडीत उतरायच किंवा शिवलींगाच्या पुढे असलेल्या टोकावरून उतरणार्‍या पायवाटेने खालच्या रस्त्यावर भादसकोंडा गावाच्या दिशेला उतरायच. भादसकोंडा गावाच्या पायवाटेने खाली उतरल्यावर वडुस्ते - ताम्हणी रस्त्याच्या कडेला वाघदेवाचे मंदीर आहे. तेथुन वर चढुन गेल्यावर एक नैसर्गिक गुहा आहे. ती पाहून डांबरी रस्त्याने आपण १० मिनिटात खिंडीपाशी पोहोचतो.

पोहोचण्याच्या वाटा मुंबईहुन लोणावळा गाठावे. लोणावळ्याहून भुशी डॅम, INS शिवाजीला जाणार्‍या रस्त्याने पेठ शहापूर - बा - मार्गे वडुस्ते हे किल्ल्याच्या पायथ्याचे गाव गाठावे. लोणावळ्यापासून वडुस्ते गाव ५१ किमी अंतरावर आहे. लोणावळे - वडुस्ते अशी एसटी बस आहे. पण या मार्गावर इतर रहदारी फ़ारशी नसल्याने. खाजगी वहानाने गेलेले चांगले. लोणावळ्याहून वडुस्ते गावात पोहोचल्यावर, तोच रस्ता पुढे ताम्हणी घाट आणि मुळशी मार्गे पुण्याकडे जातो. या रस्त्याने दोन किलोमीटरवर एक खिंड आहे. या खिंडीत डाव्या बाजूला म्हणजेच धरणाच्या बाजूला एक ट्रान्सफ़ॉर्मर आहे. तर उजव्या बाजूला कैलासगड असलेल्या डोंगराची धार खाली उतरलेली आहे. या ठिकाणी किल्ले कैलासगड उर्फ़ घोडमांजरीचा डोंगर अशी पाटी लावलेली आहे. येथुन एक तासात गडावर पोहोचता येते.

पुणे-मुळाशी-ताम्हणी मार्गे कैलासगड ७८ किलोमीटरवर आहे. पुणे मार्गे येतांना भादसकोंडा गावाच्या पुढे कैलास गडाची खिंड आहे.

राहाण्याची सोय किल्ल्यावर रहाण्याची सोय नाही.

जेवणाची सोय किल्ल्यावरील पाणी पिण्यायोग्य नाही.
