Jagadguru Shri Sant Tukaram Maharaj Mandir Dehu, also known as Shri Kshetra or Dehu temple is dedicated to Sant Tukaram Maharaj located in Dehu village of Pune District. This temple is located at walkable distance from Sant Tukaram Maharaj Vaikunta Sthan Mandir. We had been to this temple in the month of March'25. First visited Alandi Dnyaneshwar Mandir from there I drove to this temple. Dehu is the birthplace of Sant Tukaram Maharaj, and the temple is believed to be built where he lived and composed his devotional poetry. The temple complex consists of the main shrine dedicated to Sant Tukaram Maharaj, along with other shrines dedicated to various deities like lord Vitthal, Rukmini and Lord Ganesha. Maharashtra has been the land of saint poets of the Bhakti movement. Among its one of the most popular saints is Sant Tukaram of Dehu. The main idol of Sant Tukaram Maharaj is usually decorated with traditional attire and flowers. Devotees offer prayers and recite Sant Tukaram's abhangas in his honour. The area holds significant historical and cultural importance as it preserves the legacy of Sant Tukaram Maharaj. Sant Tukaram Maharaj is known for his abhangs which devotees still sing with reference today. His compositions are as famous in Kirtans as they are sung with devotion and found great joy in listening them. Architecture of Shri Tukaram Maharaj Sansthan: This today's seen temple was built by Sant Tukaram's ancestor, Vishwambhar Bua. it is a stone temple built in the traditional Maharashtrian style. There is Big Arch constructed at main road which indicates the way to this temple. After walking couple of meters will reach to the main temple entrance. Above the main gate there is statue of Sant Tukaram. About Sant Tukaram Maharaj: Dehu is the place where Sant Tukaram was born and spent his entire life. He born into a prosperous family and received education related to business and agriculture from his father. His parents passed away when he was young. the entire responsibility of the family fell on his shoulders. he was skilled in his trade. But after several deaths in the family, he began to feel detached from his business activities. He performed penance on Bhangiri mountain for 15 days without food or water. After this, when he came down from the mountain, his face glowed as of Saint. He began writing and singing Abhangs. About 4500 Abhangs were written by Sant Tukaram Maharaj in his life time. He was greatly influenced by poet Saints like Sant Dnyaneshwar, Namdev and Kabir. It is believed that Sant Tukaram departed for the heavenly adobe in his physical body while singing Abhangs. For this reason there is no Samadhi for him anywhere. Place to visit in Dehu: Sant Tukaram Maharaja Samadhi temple is a holy and peaceful place to pay respect to the great saint and his abhangs. You can do the following things at Dehu village near Sant Tukaram Maharaj Sansthan. Tukaram Maharaj Kshetra is one which is known for Sant Tukaram, where he born lived his entire life span. Sant Tukaram House: Visit the house of Sant Tukaram, which is located near the temple. It is simple and humble house where Sant Tukaram lived with his family and composed his Abhangs. Sant Tukaram Vaikunta Sthan Mandir: It is believed that Sant Tukaram Maharaj attained moksha here by boarding a celestial chariot that took him to Vaikunta. Indrayani River: Visit the Indrayani river, for which there are steps near the Shri Kshetra and also near the Vaikunta Sthan Mandir. Sit relax and enjoy the nature of river. This is a holy river where Sant Tukaram used to take bath and perform his rituals. You can also take a dip in the river and perform puja rituals on the bank of river. Sant Tukaram Gatha Mandir: This is octagonal shaped temple where you can read the Abhangs of Saint Tukaram, which are inscribed on the walls of the temple in Marathi and Devanagari Scripts. Bhakta gana have built a memorial under the Tree from where Saint Tukaram left for the heavenly abode is & this Pavithra vruksha is preserved well until today. Thousands of hard core devotees from all over India congregate at this place every year on this auspicious occasion to witness this vruksha on its own shake & tremble exactly at the time when Saint Tukaram left for his heavenly abode carried along with by Lord Shriman Narayana himself.A divine feat to witness and be a part of such a miraculous happening.
Moreover please make a note that It's a great memorable event which takes place every year with the palanquins of Saint Tukaram Maharaj & Saint Gnaneshwar maharaj are being taken in a mammoth procession of warkari bhajanis with abhangha taal,chipla reverberating and percussion beats reaching the sky . Procession starts respectively from Dehu & Alandi to the Vitthal Mandir at Pandharpur which is almost 270 Kilometres distance to cover by foot which takes about 15 to 20 days. This holy pada yatra goes through many towns & villages .Hindus must see this religious place bubbling with divine energy and reenergize your mind with Good thoughts to lead a better life.
