Overview of shivneri fort : Shivneri Fort is the birthplace of the founder of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It was built in the 16th century and was recognised as a military fortification. The place is also famous for being the place where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was trained. Its proximity from Pune, atop a hill with Junnar at its base, makes Shivneri Fort a good picnic spot for the locals. Its sheer magnificence draws a considerable number of visitors each year. Plus, there are some more attractions nearby which can be covered along with the fort in a day. Those who are always looking for a quiet and quick escape into nature can head to Shivneri. Its terrain makes it a good trekking route too. Having said that, several history lovers are also drawn to the attraction for its historical significance. An English Traveller, Fraze, who visited Shivneri Fort in the late 17th century noticed that the fort was so well managed that it has enough supplies to feed thousands of families for about 6 to 7 years. The ancient architecture and its massive built is also worth a visit to Shivneri Fort. History : Shivneri Fort was built between mid and early-16th century over a trade route in Shivneri. Before the route was established, back in the 1st Century AD, Shivneri was majorly occupied by the Buddhists. Later on, the Devagiri and the Yadavas ruled this region. The aim of Shivneri Fort was to guard and protect the trade route that started from Desh and extended till Kalyan. In the 15th century, Shivneri was taken away from the Delhi Sultanate and handed over to the Bahmani Sultanate. Later, the fort was taken over by the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. In the late-16th century, Bahadur Nizam Shah II, the Sultan of Ahmadnagar appointed Maloji Bhonsle as the chief of Shivneri and Chakan. Maloji Bhonsle resided at the fort along with his family and in February 1960, Shivaji Bhonsle (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) was born at Shivneri. His name was derived from the Shivai Temple inside the fort premises. Shivaji Bhonsle spent most of his childhood years in the fort. In 1820, the fort was acquired by the British after the Anglo-Maratha War. Important note : At Shivneri Fort, one can explore the entire premises along with the grand defending gates. Visitors get to see a mosque, a prayer hall, the Badami Talav and the water springs too. The springs are natural springs which are active all through the year. They are called Ganga and Yamuna as they were considered equally sacred. Near the pond, the statues of Shivaji Maharaj and his mother, Jijabai are installed for the visitors to pay tribute to the legends. Another famous activity to do at Shivneri Fort is Trekking through the western slope of the hill. This portion is also called “the chain route” because, during the time of Shivaji Maharaj, his troops would climb up with the help of a chain. Now, this route is a preferred trekking route by intermediate to advanced trekkers. Several trekking groups arrange for such treks at Shivneri. One can also enrol themselves for a safer and enjoyable experience. The region around Shivneri also have some attractions that travellers can explore. Some of them are Malshej Ghat, Lenyadri Caves, Junnar Fort, Pimpalgaon Joga Dam, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope etc. If a plan is charted carefully, one might be able to cover most of these attractions in a day or so.

I recently had the privilege of visiting शिवनेरी in Junnar, a place rich in history and cultural significance. This fort, the birthplace of the renowned Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, stands as a symbol of valor and leadership for the Maratha community and beyond. The aura of the fort is adorned with blooming flowers, ancient stones, and a tranquil ambiance that seems to echo the tales of its glorious past. However, during my visit, I couldn't help but notice that many visitors were engrossed in capturing countless photos and videos on their phones, missing the essence of the place itself. It saddened me to see that the focus had shifted from immersing oneself in the remarkable history of Shivaji Maharaj to just collecting digital memories. One thing that caught my eye was the commendable maintenance of the fort. It is heartening to see the efforts put into preserving this historical gem for generations to come. Furthermore, I was delighted to learn about the ongoing tree plantation initiatives within the fort premises, contributing to the conservation of the environment and enhancing the natural beauty of the site. Another positive aspect is the availability of amenities such as water tanks with filtered water, ensuring visitors have access to clean and refreshing drinking water. The presence of gardens adds a touch of tranquility to the fort, allowing visitors to relax and soak in the surroundings. Additionally, it was encouraging to witness the development work in progress at certain areas of the fort, signifying a commitment to continuous improvement and enhancement of the visitor experience. It's crucial for us all to remember that places like Shivneri Fort are not just photo opportunities but living museums of our heritage. Each stone, each flower, and every corner of this historic fort has a story to tell, a story of bravery, resilience, and grandeur that shaped the course of history. Let us take a moment to put down our phones, pause the photo session, and truly absorb the spirit of this remarkable place. Let's delve into the past, learn about the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, and honor the greatness of our ancestors. Visiting Shivneri Fort should be a journey of discovery, reflection, and homage to the heroes who walked these grounds centuries ago. May we all be inspired by the tales of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and carry forward his legacy with the respect and admiration it truly deserves. Let's cherish our history, not just in pixels, but in our hearts and minds. #ShivneriFort #ProudHistory #RespectOurHeritage"

Fort Shivneri is a must visit for all history lovers. It takes 90 km's or 2 hours drive from Pune, once you reach Narayangaon it is some 19 km's away for the Fort. Fort Shivneri is very popular as it witnesses the birth of the great Maratha King Shivaji Maharaj. The Fort is not difficult to trek as there are steps (proper) prepared and there is an ample place to take rest on the sides. September to December is the ideal time to visit as the environment is really awesome and you will see lot of flowers along the way. You will also see the temple of Goddess Shivai Mata because of whom the King was named as "Shivaji". You can choose to take blessings of Mata before you go up or you can visit the temple while getting down. Fort is completely free from littering and one should appreciate the kind of efforts which ASI and Forest Dept has put in to making it happen. The Fort has approximately 800 steps and once you reach the top, the breathtaking view of Junnar City will make you feel fresh. Wind will flow in to your lungs and make you feel rejuvenated. While most of the construction has been destroyed but places like Shivjanmasthan are still there to show the luxury of Maratha Empire. Ambarkhana (Elephant Home) is also there but sadly there is not much of an electricity to see everything. While you reach the farthest end of the mountain, you will be able to see the place where Chatrapati was born. The room is locked but through the doors you can take a look inside. It certainly is a moment of Pride to have seen such places where such great warriors are born. After you have seen the Shivjanmasthan come out and take look at the scenery, wild flowers and breezing wind. Sit on the steps and relax for a while. While on your way down, do not forget to take the blessings of Goddess Shivai Mata. Once you come down, you can have option of having Fresh Lime, Kokum Sharbat or Light Snacks of Bhel etc. The parking is on the roadside and should not charge you more than 30 INR. If you have elderly people along with you then please plan to spend at least 3 to 4 hours for the entire journey. It certainly is a moment of Pride for every Indian to witness such a historical place. I request each one of you to avoid use of any plastic or littering as it spoils the experience of other travelers. Jay Hind, Jay Maharashtra! Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jay!!

Fairly well maintained fort. Easy steps and plain footpaths all the way till the top. Should be easy for healthy adults too. Takes about 1 hour 10 minutes with 4-5 halts of 5 minutes along the way with moderate climbing speed. Things to see – Most past structures on the fort are reduced to mere residue. Only structures that are intact or renovated are - Shivai temple midway, few Buddhist caves near Shivai temple, then a structure at the top where a cradle (पाळणा) is kept to signify that Maharaj was born here, a Kadelot point at the end of the hilltop from where city of Junnar can be seen. Notes: 1. There are no eateries allowed at the top. Drinking water tanks are available at the top only. So ensure to take along any food items and water if required. 2. Toilet block is available on the way to Shivai temple. There is one more at the top but it seemed to be for VIPs, and appeared closed when we visited. 3. Weekends witness quite a few school trips and so students queue up everywhere after 12 PM. So make sure to reach at least by 10 AM to the fort so as to climb and reach to the top by around 11 AM. 4. Car/bike parking is available along the road to the fort but its hassle-free. Fort Charges: ₹50; for maintenance of the fort which go to Archaeological Survey of India.
