The Worli Fort is a fort built by the British in Worli, Mumbai, India.[1] The fort, often mistakenly referred to as being built by the Portuguese, was built by the British around 1675. The fort, built on the Worli hill, overlooked the Mahim Bay at a time the city was made up of just seven islands. It was used as a lookout for enemy ships and pirates. Scan the length and breadth of India, and you’re bound to notice that this country is a trove of gigantic forts. Once serving as a line of defence for several centuries, these forts are nothing less than architectural enigmas. However, due to prolonged negligence of these structures, they’ve now become prone to encroachments, only to be taken over illegally. Factopedia: Built in 1675 by the British, the Worli Fort was erected to keep a check on enemy ships and pirates. Locally known as the Worli Killa, it is located in the G-South ward and is in the jurisdiction of the State Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Maharashtra. Present state: This fort was completely restored by the Archaeological Survey of India in 2009 and is now well maintained. However, an illegal gym has been constructed in the fort and is functioning for several years. Despite the authorities being informed about the same, no action has been taken against it as yet. There’s also a temple built inside the fort. Install A Brief History Of Mumbai’s Worli Fort Sridevi Nambiar Set at the very tip of Worli, past a dense and historic fishing village, is the iconic Worli Fort – a lesser known historic landmark in Mumbai. The centuries-old fort is very rarely frequented by tourists owing to its inconvenient location, and has accordingly been mostly neglected by the government as well. Yet the fort – which still stands tall and majestic – and its surrounding neighborhood are gratifying sites to visit.

Worli fort is one of the important historical monument in Mumbai city built by Britishers during 17th century It's located at the end of worli koli wada ,you can come till worli village bus station by bus or by car. From bus station narrow lanes will take you at the end of koli wada where this little fortress is strategically located. Those lanes in fishing village are always too busy with local people and fisherman's activities. Only by walking or maximum by bike you can enter here. From main Street it's 15-20 minutes walk till fort. Entire fort is re constructed by ASI so you can feel it's original glory during its golden days. This fortress represents western construction style as it's built by East india company. Triangular shaped bastions with nice bell tower is one of the unique features of this little fortress. You will be surprised while entering this fort as fortifications are almost 4 meters in width in order to protect the fort from heavy artillery firing. This is very small fort so nothing much to check out inside the fort but this is the only fort in Mumbai which have the source of fresh water in side the fort so you can see the well inside the fort. Majority of space occupied by local koli wada gymnasium. You can also take darshan of newly built lord hanuman in small temple situated inside fort. However when you take a staircase and come on the fortification wall mind boggling view is waiting for you. As this fort is situated on the tip of worli you can click some of the best photos of sea link and sky line of our beautiful Mumbai city.

Historic place. East india company established that. One of the massive tourist's attraction. Only negative side is the smell of dried fish. Histoty: The Worli Fort is considered to have been built by the British around the 17th century as a lookout for enemy ships and pirates. Alternate accounts suggest that it was built by the Portuguese during the 16th century. Regardless, overlooking the Mahim Bay at a time when Mumbai was just a group of islands, the fort was of great strategic importance to the British Navy guarding the western coast of the country. The fort has a built in well, a temple and plenty of space to soak in views of Mahim, Bandra. And the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea link outside the fort are platforms for cannons, a reminder of its military significance in the past. This fort is among the three that overlook the Mahim Bay on Mumbai’s western coast, with Mahim Fort and Bandra Fort to its north. All three forts were adapted by the British to boost defense along the coast, even though only Worli Fort is considered to have been built by them. As historic as the fort is, it has been largely omitted from tourist itineraries primarily due to the dynamic and very crowded Worli Fishing Village, which cuts it off from mainstream Worli. The centuries-old village is home to one of the oldest communities of fisherfolk still existing in Mumbai. It was after the construction of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link – which offers a spectacular view of Worli Village – that the fort and the deplorable state it was in started getting due attention.

Worli Fort - A Historic Fortress Amidst Modern Mumbai

Nestled amidst the bustling cityscape of Mumbai, Worli Fort stands as a testament to the city's rich historical past. During my recent visit to this ancient fortress, I was enthralled by its intriguing blend of history, architecture, and stunning coastal views.

Worli Fort, also known as the Worli Bandar Fort, dates back to the 17th century and was constructed by the Portuguese. This formidable structure played a crucial role in protecting the city's coastline and served as a trading outpost. Today, it offers a captivating glimpse into Mumbai's maritime history.

As I entered the fort through its arched gateway, I was immediately drawn to its weathered stone walls and sturdy bastions. The fort's strategic location, overlooking the Arabian Sea, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

While the fort itself is relatively small, its historical significance and architectural charm make it a worthwhile visit. Exploring its nooks and crannies, I imagined the fort's past as a hub of bustling activity, where merchants, sailors, and soldiers once converged.

Worli Fort provides a peaceful respite from the city's fast-paced rhythm. Its expansive grounds invite visitors to stroll along the fort's ramparts, offering a serene escape from the urban clamor.

While the fort is not extensively restored or maintained, its rugged allure adds to its appeal. It serves as a reminder of Mumbai's glorious maritime heritage and the need to preserve its historical treasures.

For history enthusiasts and admirers of architectural remnants, Worli Fort offers a unique glimpse into Mumbai's past. Its picturesque location and serene ambiance make it an ideal spot to appreciate the city's juxtaposition of old and new. A visit to Worli Fort is an opportunity to connect with Mumbai's historical roots and embrace the enchanting allure of this...
