Recently, we visited second oldest church in Pune i.e. St. Patrick's Cathedral, which is also Oldest Roman Catholic Church & Cathedral in Pune (Oldest Church in Pune is St. Mary's Church in Pune Cantonment which was built in 1825 and a Protestant church). St. Patrick's Cathedral (1850) is amongst the three most important churches in Pune alongwith St. Mary's Church, Pune Cantonment (1825) & All Saints Church, Khadki, Pune (1869) St. Patrick's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic religious building located adjacent to the 'Empress Garden' in Pune, India. Built in neo-gothic style in 1850, it was adopted as 'cathedral' church in 1886. It is the main church of the Pune diocese. The church is purely Gothic Architecture in style & world famous architect Ar. Charles Correa was the main architect for the church. The cathedral was built in 1850 mainly to cater the Irish Catholic soldiers and others settled in Wanwadi and nearby areas. Earlier, mass was celebrated only for the troops, who were mainly Irish and other Catholics in a single-room chapel at the end of Right Flank Lines in Wanwadi. Bishop Anastasius Hartmann OFM Cap., the Apostolic Vicar of Bombay and Poona, wanted to have a better place of worship, and so he co-opted Fr. James Carry, an Irish diocesan priest from the Madras Mission, as a chaplain in Poona in 1849. Fr. Carry immediately drew up plans to erect a new chapel. The chapel was built with contributions from people and from the soldiers, who contributed a month's salary. On 8 December 1850, the first mass was celebrated in the new chapel, which is now St. Patrick's Cathedral. Fr. Carry completed the south (Wanwadi) side of the church, with its pinnacled buttresses. The north side (Ghorpuri) was completed later by Fr. Esseiva, S.J. Jesuit missionary Bernard Beider Linden was appointed the first bishop. Thus, St. Patrick's Church became St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1887. On 15 July 1984, the roof of the cathedral collapsed. With donations from benefactors, the cathedral was rebuilt by Bishop Valerian D' Souza, with a new curved vault roof designed by architect Charles Correa in place of the old pointed roof. The re-dedication of St. Patrick's Cathedral was held on 22 October 1987. Major renovation, repairs and redecoration of the cathedral was again done from 2009 to 2010. St. Patrick's Cathedral is a very beautiful building in Gothiac Architecture style. It has a large chapel for mass and very large and spacious surrounding area with lots of greenary. One feels wonderful and calm in cathedral premises. People from various faith visit St. Patrick's Cathedral to experience beauty of Gothiac Architectural styled Structure and also to see what world renowned architect, Mr. Charles Correa has created as a master piece in 2010. St. Patrick's Cathedral is a fully functional cathedral and regular mass (including Sunday Mass) is attended by roman Catholics from Wanowarie, Fatima Nagar and surrounding area. I do visit St. Patrick's Cathedral 3-4 times a year alongwith guests to show them historic monument built in 1850 (175 years old) in Gothiac Architecture Style. One must visit St. Patrick's Cathedral once a while to enjoy Gothiac Architecture, historic monumnent and also a real peace of mind inside the chapel premises.
