84 khambhon ki chhatri — Attraction in Rajasthan

This structure is labeled as a cenotaph that typically is built in the memory of the royal family of the region but this Chhatri in Bundi with 84 Pillars appears to be a Temple with a Shivling in the center so it was puzzling for me when I visited here last week. Nevertheless, I found this place to be a majestic construction and it was symmetric on three sides and the fourth had a staircase.

Looking at the podium and the parikrama this resembles a Hindu temple. Several images depicting the lifestyle of the Indian kings of the 17th century are carved on the pillars with the edifice having various animals relief in marble and sandstone.

The ceiling is also painted with various mythological figures. A small and tight staircase leads to the upper floor. The second floor has a large round curved roof at the center of four small domes each at the corners. The view from the top is rewarding in that one can see the Bundi city and the Bundi fort in the distant far. In the front yard are lush green lawns with a fountain in the middle that adds to the beauty of the 84 pillared temple.

पुराने समय में बहुत से शासकों ने अपनी पत्नी, प्रेमिका या प्रियजनों की याद में स्मारकों का निर्माण करवाया था। ठीक उसी प्रकार राजस्थान के रजवाड़ों का इतिहास भी उससे कहीं ज्यादा समृद्ध है। यहां पर एक राजा ऐसे भी थे,जिन्होंने अपनी पत्नी या प्रेमिका की याद में नहीं बल्कि अपने महल में काम करने वाली दाई के पुत्र की याद में एक अद्भुत स्मारक बनवाया था। यह स्मारक विदेशों तक में मशहूर है। राजस्थान के हाड़ौती अंचल के बूंदी में बनी है विश्व प्रसिद्ध 84 खम्भों की छतरी, यहां पर लाखों देशी-विदेशी पर्यटक इस अनूठे स्मारक का दीदार करने हर साल आते हैं। बूंदी में बनी इस विश्व प्रसिद्ध 84 खम्भों की छतरी की वास्तुकला और कहानी अपने आप में अनूठी है। इसका निर्माण सन् 1684 में तत्कालीन शासक राव राजा अनिरुद्ध सिंह ने अपनी धाय मां के पुत्र यानी धाभाई देवा की स्मृति में करवाया था। उस वक्त उनके दिमाग में एक अनूठी बात सूझी और उन्होंने समय को इस छतरी को जोड़ दिया। इस छतरी में कुल 1600 कोने बनवाए और 84 खंभे स्थापित कराए। इस तरह 1600 कोने और 84 खंभों को मिलाएं तो 1684 होता है जो छतरी को बनाने का साल है। देवा राव राजा अनिरुद्ध सिंह की धाय मां का पुत्र होने के कारण वह उन्हें बेहद प्रिय था। देवा का अल्प आयु में निधन हो जाने से अत्यंत दुखी हुये राव राजा अनिरुद्ध सिंह ने उसकी याद को चिरस्थाई बनााने रखने के लिए 84 खम्भों की छतरी का निर्माण करवा कर उन्हें समर्पित किया था। वहीं छतरी के अंदर की छत पर अप्सराओं व संगीतज्ञ तथा उसके साथ साथ चारों ओर हाथियों की लड़ाई, बांसुरी व वीणा बजाती सज्जित सुंदरियां, मुग्ध हिरण और श्रृंगार करती रमणीक नायिकाओं के मनमोहक भित्ति चित्र अंकित है। इसी तरह छतरी के चारों और मेहराबों में हाथियों की विभिन्न मुद्राओं के चित्र भी अति मनोहारी हैं। वहीं छतरी के मध्य वृहदाकार शिवलिंग भी स्थित है। यह स्मारक पुरातत्व विभाग द्वारा संरक्षित है। सुबह 9:45 से सांय 5 बजे तक खुला रहता है। अब छतरी को देखने के लिये शुल्क निर्धारित...
