🏔️ Doddabetta Peak – The “Big Mountain” of Tamil Nadu

📍 Location & Elevation Doddabetta Peak stands proudly at 2,637 m (8,650 ft) above sea level, making it the highest mountain in the Nilgiri range and fourth-highest in South India (after Anamudi, Mannamalai, Meesapulimala) . Located just 9 km from Ooty, it’s easily accessible via a well-paved road that winds gently up to the summit .

The summit offers a breathtaking 360° panorama: lush shola forests, rolling blue-hued hills, tea estates, and even distant plains of Mysore and Coimbatore on a clear day .

At the top sits the Telescope House—operated by TTDC since 1983—with two public telescopes to zoom into Ooty Lake, the Botanical Gardens, and far-off peaks .

Open daily roughly 8 AM–6 PM, entry is very budget-friendly: ₹6/adult, free for under-5s; camera charges are ₹10 (still) and ₹50 (video) .

Parking near the summit is available but fills quickly—arrive early to avoid queues, especially if you plan to use the Telescope House or go trekking .

Road access is smooth year-round, though cautious driving is advised during rains due to slippery patches .

Temperatures remain cool: 10–21 °C in summer, and 5–21 °C in winter .

Visit between October and January for crisp skies and minimal fog . Monsoon (June–Sept) brings rain-shrouded trails and misty views—lovely but often obscured .

Significance -: The Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats meet at Nilgiri hills. It forms a part of Western Ghats, covering the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. The peaks of Nilgiri have an elevation of 1800 to 2400 metres,and the highest peak is Doddabetta in Tamil Nadu. (Situated in Ooty)

It is situated at an altitude of 2,637 meters (8,650 feet) above sea level.

Timings- From 8am Onwards till 6pm

Entry fee - 10/- (On the way there is a toll gate where you have to pay 20/-)

Caution - NO plastic is allowed here. It's better to avoid carrying plastic items.

Shops - On reaching the peak, there are 2 shops which sell hot tea, lemon tea and coffee and various kinds of fried snacks-chilly bajji, noodles, dal vada etc.

We, two people, drank 1 cup of lemon tea (20/- per cup) each. It was delicious. It was around 8AM (01 Aug 23), temp was around 14°C, with cool breeze flowing, the hot lemon tea with basil leaves was so refreshing and warming.

While returning from the top, we enjoyed peanuts masala (cost - 30/-) at a shop downstairs which was also tasty.

First floor - There is a telescopic aerial view available on 1st floor on climbing stairs. Since it was foggy, we didn't go there as nothing would have been visible.

From the Top - Its a scenic view which people go to click some photographs. Other than that, the mountain top gives you beautiful landscape views of the surrounding hills, including Chamundi Hills, grassy plains of Mysore and Coimbatore including Karnataka border. One can even see the forests of Bandipur National Park from the top.

Parking- The parking area is small and gets filled soon on public holidays. So either reach early in the morning hours or on week days. It is usually crowded in weekends. Otherwise you mayn't get parking space.

Way Up - On the way up from the junction to the peak, the view is beautiful with tall trees on either sides of the road. The city view is also available where we halted and took some photographs.
