பிள்ளை வரம் தரும் தூத்துக்குடி சங்கர ராமேசுவரர் சுவாமி.

திருச்செந்தூரில் சூரசம்ஹாரம் முடிந்தவுடன் இந்திரன் தனது மகளாகிய தெய்வானையை முருகனுக்கு திருமணம் செய்து வைக்கிறார். திருமணம் திருப்பரங்குன்றத்தில் நடக்கிறது.‘கந்தபுராணத்தில் கச்சியப்ப சிவாச்சாரியார் தெய்வானை திருமணப் படலத்தில் விரிவாக இதனை விளக்குகிறார். சிவனும் பார்வதியும் தங்கள் திருவடிகளில் வீழ்ந்து வணங்கிய மணமக்களை மார்புற தழுவி வாழ்த்துகின்றனர். முருகப்பெருமானின் திருமணத்தை கண்டு களிக்க வந்த சிவபெருமானும், பார்வதி தேவியும் சோலை சூழ்ந்த இவ்வூருக்கு (இன்றைய தூத்துக்குடிக்கு) எழுந்தருளி தங்குகின்றனர், அப்போது உமையாள், சிவபெருமானிடம் வேதங்களின் விழுப் பொருளாகிய திருமந்திரத்தை உபதேசிக்குமாறு வேண்டுகிறார்.

இறைவனிடம் அம்பிகை உபதேசம் பெற்ற திருத்தலமாதலின் இவ்வூர் திருமந்திர நகர் என வழங்கப்பட்டது. இத்திருக்கோயிலை காசிப முனிவர், கவுதமர், பரத்துவாசர், அத்திரி போன்ற முனிவர்கள் வணங்கி அருள் பெற்றார்கள் என்று வழிவழியான தலபுராணச் செய்திகள் கூறுகின்றன. தெய்வீக பயணமாக திருச்செந்தூர் வேலவனை வழிபட வந்த காசிப முனிவர் சோலை மிகுந்த இவ்வூரை கண்டு மகிழ்ந்து இங்கு ஒரு சிவலிங்கத்தை எழுந்தருளச் செய்து வழிபாடு நிகழ்த்தினார் என்றும் அதுவே சங்கரராமேசுவரர் கோயில் என்றும் குறிப்பிடுகின்றனர். பாண்டிய மன்னராட்சியின் பிற்கால பாண்டிய மரபில் குறுநில மன்னரான சந்திரசேகர பாண்டியனின் புதல்வரான சங்கரராம பாண்டியன் கயத்தாறை தலைநகராகக் கொண்டு ஆட்சி செய்து வந்தான். மன்னர் குலம் தழைக்க, மனை வாங்க மழலைச் செல்வம் இல்லாது வருந்தினான், மன்னன் வருத்தத்தை கண்ட பெரியோர்கள் காசி போன்ற புன்னிய திருத்தலங்களுக்குச் சென்று புனித நீராடி வருமாறு கூறினர்.

மன்னர் தனது பரிவாரங்களுடன் புனித நீராட செல்லும் போது இறைவனது குரல் அசரீரியாக வேந்தே நீ, திருமந்திர நகரில் உள்ள வாஞ்சா புட்கரணி என்ற தீர்த்தத்தில் நீராடி அங்குள்ள சிவலங்கத்தை வழிபட்டுவா என ஒலித்தது. மன்னன் தீர்த்தத்தில் நீராடியவுடன் அசரீரி மீண்டும், அரசே காசிப முனிவரால் ஸ்தாபனம் செய்து பூசிக்கப்பட்ட சிவலிங்க பெருமானுக்கு திருக்கோயில் எழுப்புவாயாக என கூறியது. இறைவனின் கட்டளைக்கு ஏற்ப மன்னரால் இத்திருக்கோயில் கட்டப்பட்டது. இத்திருக்கோயிலில் உள்ள வாஞ்சா புஷ்கரணி என்ற தீர்த்தத்தில் நீராடி இறைவனை வழிபட்டு வந்தால் பிள்ளை பேறு கிடைக்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம்.
