Templd is glowing and kumbapishegam performed on 2.2.2025. The Soundararaja perumal Temple, Nagapattinam dedicated to the God Maha Vishnu. It is located in the Nagapattinam town , 750 metres towards west of Railway station and 2 km south of the bus stand. Presntly kumbapishegam renovation is going on. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Alvar saints from the 6th–9th centuries CE. It is the 19th and one among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu. Vishnu is worshiped as Soundararaja Perumal and his consort Lakshmi as Soundaravalli. This temple is believed to have existed across the four yugams. Nagapattinam gets its name from Naga Adiseshan the serpent, who worshipped Siva and Vishnu here in krita / satya yugam. Previously it was a forest called Sundararanyam, which ran the Vritha Kaveri river (a tributary of the Kaveri river, today known as Odampokki). In the treta yugam, Dhruva heard about this place, obtained darsanam of Vishnu after much penance. It is said that the temple came into existence after this. Bhudevi also worshipped here in the treta yugam. Following Dhruva’s example, sage Markandeyar did the same in dwapara yugam, and the Chola king Saleesugan worshipped here in kali yugam and even got married at this temple. The temple timngs are from 6.30am to 12.30pm and 4.30pmto 9 pm. Puratasi festival esp. Saturdays are very famous here and we can worship Lord in different divya alangaram on every Saturday. Panguni uthram festival is also conducted in a granx manner. It is one of the rare temples where Lord Vishnu is present in all three kolams (nindra kolam as Soundara Raja Perumal or Neelamegha Perumal, amarndha kolam as Govinda Raja Perumal, and sayana kolam as Ranganatha Perumal in the same premises. Garudar Periya Tiruvadi unusually, is seen seated. Prasadam is being distributed to the devotees everyday in the morning and evening thro Kaigaryacsabha and the battars here organised in a most befitting manner. A must visit temple. Nearby two home stay accommodations are available and lodges too. Kumbapishegam performed on 02.02.2025...

This temple has very big Gopuram having fifteen vimanas. The vimana above the Moolavar sannadhi consists of five kalasams.

Here Neelamega perumal lies in standing posture whereas Govindaraja perumal is in sitting posture and Ranganatha perumal in Sleeping posture.

Also inside this temple there are seperate sannadhis for Lord Pachivannar, Pavalavannar, Varadharajar, Ramar, Srinivasar, Vaikundanathar, Sri Aandal, Aanchaneyar and Garudan.

In Lord Ranganathar sannadhi there is an wounderful Bronze idol of Lord Narashima with eight hands. One hand of Narashima safely secures prahalatha, one hand blesses him by touching his head and the other hand's are killing Hiranya.

At the same time he is save prahalatha (ie) good things and destroy Hiranya (ie) bad or evil things.

Also it is said that, after giving dharsan to the little boy Dhuruva who performed a hard penance, Narashimar has come here.

It has to be noted that, the lord god gave place in his cap for Dhurva who suffered a lot due to his step mother, and in the other hand in the same lap he has killed Hiranya who was his enemy.

Utsava kola Thaayar Gajalakshmi poses as being prayed by Elephant here.

Thayaar:

The Thayaar found in this sthalam is Soundaryavalli. The Utsavar Thayaar is Gajalakshmi.

Our first visit to Nagapattinam was about 8 years back in the month of November. Three families left Srirangam by Ranga Cabs Travera at 6.30 A.M to visit several Divya desams in Chozha Nadu. It was atwo day trip and we visited Nagapattinam the following day from Tirukanamangai. Nagapattinam was in the news for its havoc causing Tsunami. This temple town on the sea coast was a famous Buddhist centre in the fourth century and was famous for its pearls and gems.We were visiting Soundararaja temple which houses Moolavar Neelamegha Perumal in standing Posture facing east Utsavar flanked by Sridevi and Bhu devi is Soundararaja Perumal. Thayar is Soundaravalli and vimanam is Soundarya vimanam and the kshetram is called Soundarya kshetram. The Deity (Moolavar) was decked from Head to Feet in exquisite jewellery and emanated a king of greenish hue. We were told that since stock-taking was to take place He was so adorned. We couldn't believe our luck and as it was not crowded feasted our eyes on His Soundaryam wondering if the jewels added to His Beauty or vice versa? Our next trip happened on the 3rd of June 2018 when 55 women belonging to Srirangam Strigal Stotra pata group went for Paduka sahasra parayanam. We left at 4.00 in the morning reached Nagapattinam by 7.30 and started parayanam by 8.00A.M and finished the 1008 slokams by 12.30 p.m. with a 10 minute interval for hot milk. After the parayanam there was a puspavrishti(flower shower) for LakshmiNrisimha and swami Desikan. We visited Soundararaja temple when it opened in the evening and had good darsan of Perumal and Thayar. We got to see Lakshminrisimhan and swami Desikan in purappadu and left for Srirangam...

A wonderful ancient temple and a divya desam too. Temple was part of our plan to visit in our Nagapattinam visit. Though we forgot the famous Kayaroganeswarar and Neelyadhakshi temple, but we visited this one. Temple faces east, Lord faces east too. Fantastic seven tier gopuram facing east ( read that in olden days it was even used as a light house, due to its height and closeness to the shore), Kodimaram present. We went a bit early i feel, since the temple was not open, and also they must recently done the kumbhabhishekam since the temple look so neat and nicely painted. Once the priest came and opened the main temple door, was literally shocked to see such a wonderful perumal standing so majestically. no words at all. Definitely a must visit temple. My parents told me that the history of the temple, gave rise to the name of this place (naga pattinam).
