Padmanabhapuram palace is a major attraction in Kanyakumari district of Tamilnadu. However, you may not have heard much about the nearby De Lannoy Fort (Udayagiri Fort). Eustachius De Lannoy was the Admiral of the Dutch East India Company. You may have heard about the Battle of Colachel. The Battle of Colachel is historically famous as the first war in which a European military power was defeated by an Asian king on Asian soil. In 1741, the Dutch East India Company's army led by Admiral De Lannoy was defeated by the army of King Marthanda Varma of Travancore at the coastal village of Colachel. King Marthanda Varma made De Lannoy and his men part of his army after they surrendered. Later, De Lannoy played a major role in modernizing the Travancore army. The king honored him by giving him the title of 'Valiya Kapithan' (Great Captain). The Udayagiri fort, also known as the Delano fort, was built for De Lannoy and his family to live in. It is just two kilometers away from the Padmanabhapuram palace.

The tombs of De Lannoy, his wife, and son are also here. There is also a children's (Udayagiri Fort) nearby. The Delano fort is a historical monument that can be visited along with the Padmanabhapuram palace. There is no special facility for parking vehicles here. You will have to park your vehicle on the side of the road.

One can come across the tremendously renowned military asset of the Travancore dynasty, the Udayagiri Fort on the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil National highway at Puliyoorkurichi, Tamil Nadu.

A resounding ancient structure initially formed as a mud-fort in the 17th century was later redefined with granite blocks into a 90-acre dominion in the 18th century by the Maharaja of Travancore, Marthanda Varma. The naval commander of the Dutch East India Company, Eustachius Benedictus de Lannoy was designated as the Chief of the Travancore army by the Maharaja. For 37 years, De Lannoy edified the Travancore soldiers with European techniques of fighting and thus giving it the name ‘Dillanai Kotta (De Lannoy’s Fort).

The Archaeological Department of India is currently safeguarding the antiquity of this domain that exhibits a natural park, herbal gardens, prison cells, secret tunnels, an aquarium and the fabricating unit of guns and ammunition. For a glimpse into the Travancore history one can visit De Lannoy’s tomb found in the ruins of the chapel.

This astounding fort can be visited anywhere between 8:00 am-7:00 pm at a fee of Rs.10 per person and Rs.10 for a camera in case you wish to capture some of its...

The fort is built of massive granite blocks around an isolated hillock.Presently, the fort is converted to a bio-diversity park. Rather than the name the importance of fort has been forgotten and very worsely maintained with swamps and dirty atmosphere with foul smell of birds and animal excreta everywhere. Eventhough the entry fee is less localites charge hectic parking fee. There is no allotted parking space. You will end up paying 75 Rs for a roadside parking even far away. Not recommended to visit by paying such a hectic parking fee and nothing worth to see inside rather than some deer and two three caged monkeys and some caged birds. The fort is located in Tamil Nadu approx 4 km from Padmanabhapuram Palace in Thuckalay Town, Kanyakumari District on the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil National highway at Puliyoorkurichi. This was the most important military barracks of the Travancore rulers, when Padmanabhapuram was their capital. The place could have been developed as a tourist place with historical importance

Totally disappointed. There is nothing. Don't go there. Full waste of time and money. I am really sorry to say that, it is really worst situation when I visited. First of all they are collecting parking fee for parking the vehicle on road side. I didn't understand the logic behind this. Because there is no parking facility provided by this administration. Second think is the area is poorly maintained as bushes are grown like Forrest may contain venomous snakes dangerous to visitors. The peacock was with fractured leg in very worst condition. One cat was there in a small cage look like a domestic cat boarded with wild cat poorly maintained cage. And the deer available there are also not energetic looks like going to dead soon. I don't understand why department doing this cruelty. But one positive thing is there some monkey available they are fully energetic ready to steal the food items carrying by visitors. all aware on that....
