AMMA MANDAPAM (அம்மா மண்டபம்) is in Sri Rangam, Trichy. This is approximately 2 km from Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple, Sri Rangam and one can reach here through Sri Rangam or by Mambazhasalai from Cauvery Bridge. This is the place where Cauvery runs from Kodumudi, Karur, Kuzhithalai, Sri Rangam and then to Thanjavur delta, Kumbakonam Chidambaram and finally into the Bay of Bengal ocean. This is a place where people take bath before getting into Sri Rangam Ranganathar Temple or Thiruvanaikaval temple. Also, the ritual rite performed to ancestral forefathers (திதி தர்ப்பணம்) is also given at this place and doing this in the banks of River Cauvery is considered very sacred. Separate Dress changing rooms and Toilet facilities are available for Ladies too. Barbers are easily available to perform Tonsure and Shaving which is done before doing the ritual and Acharyas/Priests later complete the rest of the rituals. After taking bath in the river, one can pray to Lord Sri Siddhi Vinayagar, Lord Sri Cauvery matha, Lord Sri Kasi Vishwanathar Sri Kasi Visalakshi, Lord Sri Vishnu Durga, and Lord Hanuman. One can also give Sesbania grandiflra greens aka Agathi Keerai in tamil (அகத்தி கீரை) to the cows roaming in and around the mandapam and rendering such acts reduces all types of karma as per Sage Kanchi Maha Periyavar.

The river Cauvery surrounds the temple town of Srirangam making it an island. A bath in a river is energizing and if one learns the rules and follows them without polluting the rivers by using soaps it is recommendable. Amma Mandapam is the bathing ghat which is specially active in Tula masam when the river which comes from Karnataka is fortified with herbs and from the hills. There are steps leading to the bathing ghat and there are separate places for men and women. Changing rooms are there for a fee. The place is strewn with pooja materials and other stuff and one has to make their way through it. In the month of October-November water for the temple puja is taken in a golden kudam on elephant back from Kaveri. At other times water is fetched from Kollidam or North Cauvery. Perumal comes to Amma Mandapam during Gajendra moksham in Chitra Purnami and during Aadi Perukku in the month of August. If pilgrims take care to dispose garbage in dust-bins and maintain the purity of this place it would be cleaner.

It's a temple + Hangout spot. It's on the banks of the river Cauvery and has a very peaceful outlook. This place really can give us a touch to nature in the busy city lifestyle. But one thing which make me feel a little worried is that the people who come here for enjoying the water leave out litters which makes the place very dirty. It's our duty to keep our city and nation clean. Usually it is used by the tourists who bathe in the water wash their cloths too and leave the waste around. Even the local public who come to do their monthly rituals also loiter and leave wastes of the rituals like plastics newspapers and also flowers which get stagnant at front corner of the water. It's a kind and humble request from a citizen please don't make our surrounding where we live and wherever we go dirty. Have a bag collect all the waste you use and throw it in a common dustbin.

The famed Amma Mandapam on the banks of Cauvery is a very important landmark for Devotees who visit Trichirappalli.

Devotees visit Amma Mandapam for various reasons

To take a holy dip in Cavery

To perform rituals to Navagraha shanthi

To perform rituals to departed souls

We visited recently for one such purpose and chose to be there quite early at dawn and thankfully was less crowded.

The Cauvery bathing ghat was not clean and safe especially for elderly n womenfolk. Lot of pilgrims were taking dip in murky waters under unsafe conditions.

The authorities could have maintained this touristic cultural n divine ghat into a nicer place with proper safety hygiene measures, covered place for dress change especially for ladies.

We could even see European Tourists visiting this place and made us wonder what impression we give them!!!

At times we wonder if we have taken things so easy n " its okay" attitude towards a better tomorrow in this 21st century!!!

We need really to improve our sense of belonging n pride in reality for our rich heritage, culture n places of worship. Its a shame we lag behind our tiny neighbors when it comes to cleanliness n preserving our historical and...
