Temple Festivals : Chithirai- five day festival. Vaikasi- Last Friday- mango abhishegam. Aani- Last Friday- Vegetables and fruits alangaram. Aavani- “Chandi Homam”. Purattasi- Navarathri Vizha. Karthigai- Deepam. Thai – Pongal- Special prayer, Thai Poosam- Purappadu. Masi- Last Sunday- Laksharchana. Panguni- First Friday- Poochorithal Vizha. Vekkali was worshipped by the Chola kings. Here devotees write their demands or wishes on a sheet of paper, place it at the feet of Ambal(Amman) and then tie it at a ‘Soolam’ (trident) at the Sannidhi. Devotees complete their worship after their wishes are fulfilled. There is no Vimanam(top roof) over the Sanctum sanctorum. Whether it is sunshine or rain, Vekkali showers her graces on all. The abhishekam performed at 6pm every New moon day elevates the life of the devotees according to the words of the learned. In olden days, It is a practice to establish a Village God/Goddess (also called as Guardian deities) at the border or entrance of the village. It is believed that those deities save the people from the evil powers. It is also a practice to keep the War gods/goddess facing towards the north direction. Vekkali Amman is established at the north direction of Woraiyur based on these practices. In early days, Woraiyur is a capital of Cholas and most likely entire Trichy is only Woraiyur but today Woraiyur is just one area within Trichy city.

ஊர்களை அமைக்கும்போது ஊர்க்காவல் தெய்வங்களை ஊர்களின் எல்லையில் எழுந்தருளச் செய்வதும், வீரமும், வெற்றியளிக்கும் தெய்வங்களையும் வடக்கு நோக்கி அமைப்பார்கள். அதன்படி ஊர் எல்லையிலும், வடக்கு நோக்கியும் அமைந்துள்ளது உறையூர் அருள்மிகு வெக்காளியம்மன் திருக்கோயில்.இக்கோயில் அமைந்துள்ளதற்கு மற்றொரு காரணம் கூறப்படுகிறது. உறையூரில் வன்பராந்தகன் என்னும் அரசன், தனது மனைவி புவனமாதேவியுடன் ஆட்சி செய்த காலத்தில், சாரமாமுனிவர் என்பவர் நந்தவனம் அமைத்து பல்வகை மலர்ச்செடிகளையும் பயிரிட்டு, மலர் கொய்து தொடுத்துத் தாயுமானசுவாமிக்கு அணிவித்து அழகு பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். இந்தநிலையில், பிராந்தகன் என்னும் பூ வணிகண் அரசரிடம் ஆதரவு பெற எண்ணி, நந்தவனத்து மலர்களைப் பறித்து அரசர்க்கு அளிக்கத் தொடங்கினான், அரசரும் உயர்வான மலர்களைக் கண்டு உளம் களித்து, தாயுமானவருக்கு மட்டுமே அணிவிப்பதற்கென சாரமாமுனிவர் அமைத்த நந்தவனத்து மலர்கள் என்று அறிந்தும்கூட, தவறான ஆசையால் வணிகனிடம் நாளும் மலர்களைப் பறித்துவர ஆணையிட்டான். நந்தவனத்தில் நாளும் மலர்கள் குறைவதைக் கண்ட சாரமாமுனிவர், ஒருநாள் வணிகன் மலர் கொய்யும் போது பிடித்துவிட்டார். தாயுமானவருக்குரிய மலர்கள் அரசனுக்கு செல்வதைக் கண்டு சினந்து மன்னரிடம் முறையிட்டார். மன்னனோ முனிவரை அலட்சியம் செய்து மலர் வணிகனது செயலை ஊக்குவிக்க, மனம் நொந்து முனிவர் தாயுமானவரிடமே முறையிட்டார். தனக்குச் செய்யும் குறைகளைக் கூட தாங்கிக் கொள்ளும் இறைவன், அடியார்க்குச் செய்கின்ற இடர்களைத் தாங்குவதில்லை என்பதை நிரூபிக்கும் வகையில், மேற்கு முகமாக திரும்பி உறையூரை நோக்கியதால், மண்மாரி பொழியத் தொடங்கியது. இதனால் ஊரை மண் மூடியது. மக்கள் தங்களைக் காக்க எல்லைத் தெய்வமாக விளங்கிய வெக்காளி அம்மனை விட்டால் வேறுவழியில்லை என்று ஓலமிட்டுச் சரண் அடைந்தனர்.அன்னை இறைவனை வேண்டினாள். மண் மாரி நின்றது. ஆனாலும், மக்கள் வீடிழந்தனர். வெட்ட வெளியே தங்குமிடமானது. மக்கள் துயர்கண்டு அன்னை வெக்காளியம்மன், உங்கள் அனைவருக்கும் வீடு கிடைக்கும் வரை நானும் உங்களைப் போல வெட்ட வெளியிலேயே இருக்கிறேன் என்று அருளியதாக வரலாறு கூறுகிறது. இன்றைக்கும் பலர் வெட்ட வெளியே வீடாகக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர். அன்னையின் உறுதிமொழி நிறைவேறாததால் இன்றைக்கும் அருள்மிகு வெக்காளியம்மன் வானமே கூரையாகக் கொண்டு அமர்ந்து பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள்பாலித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார். சோழ மன்னர்களால் வழிபட்ட தெய்வம் வெக்காளி. இத்தலத்தில் பக்தர்கள் தங்களது கோரிக்கைகளை ஒரு சீட்டில் எழுதி அம்பாளின் பாதத்தில் வைத்து பின்னர் அம்மன் சன்னதியில் உள்ள சூலத்தில் கட்டி வைப்பது வழக்கம். பக்தர்களின் கோரிக்கையை அம்பாளின் திருவருளால் நிறைவேறிய பின்னர் இத்தலத்திற்கு வந்து பிராத்தனையை செலுத்துவது கண்கூடு. இத்தலத்தில் வீற்றிருக்கும் வெக்காளியம்மனுக்கு விமானம் கிடையாது. வெயிலிலும் மலையிலும் நனைந்து "இப்படி தான் இருப்பேன்"என்று அருள் பாலித்து வருகிறார்.பிரதி பௌர்ணமியன்று மாலை 6.00 மணியளவில் அம்பாளுக்கு நடைபெறும் அபிஷேகம் பக்தர்களின் வாழ்கையை மேன்மை அடைய செய்யும் என்பது சான்றோர்வாக்கு.

had been to this powerful shrine. disgusted to experience very clearly the lack of apathy is exhibited by HR & CE . I saw with some one a laminated small picture of the presiding deity and wanted to buy one. Few fellow devotees directed me to that lady to pay to her saying she will hand over one picture to me. that lady simply asked to go to not far from her a booth and buy . no one showed up there in spite of waiting. learnt that the key of that other room is with her only also . she was lazy enough not to move to . when i went back to her place to ask her she was missing from there and in the so called "office " no one was there for me to complain at least. this is the evil of staff who get Govt salary .I also met and spoke to few sweepers and other elderly females' there who said that they do not come in this Govt salary class and they were seen dedicated in their work. By the way who had authorized HR& CE to collect money for darshan , Are they sitting in church or mosque and collect . If they do so their skin will be peeled off. what business does HR& CE in a worshiping place whosoever the faith may be. ? why not the devotees chase them out? . i wished to do my part yesterday but there was no one in that office room .
