The rich art history of Mathura every now and then reveals the antiquarian remains needed to placed for the exhibition for the public view and along with that needs a proper care, protection and preservation this necessity was felt by Sir F.S. Growse in 1874 then the collector of district who selected a beautiful but unused building situated near the collectors court. It process of acquisition was stated and year after year it had a rich collection of the heritage art pieces gathered from and near the Mathura reign and after 7 years it was opened for the public in 1881. It was taken over by the Mathura state museum in 1900. And in 1908 it had Lt. Col. Vost and pandit radha Krishnan as the first curator and asst curator respectively 1910 it published the first catalogue and in 1912 the museum came under the control of the provincial government. A new building was constructed in 1929 in the dampier park and the present building was opened to the public in 1930 and now the old museum serves as the collection house of the Mathura state museum the new building have a completely octagonal shape with the red sandstone outwork looks brilliantly sanding in the busy area of the Matura city it have beautiful gardens on the both sides to give it a charming look. It acquires a nice collection of sculptures from the galleries dedicated to the mauryan art to the medieval period the museum had been recently added a water cooler few benches in them to increase the public services of itself. the museums hold a large number of collection which can be opened for the scholars only there is very need for the proper documentation of the Mathura museum can the problem is basically due to the fund raising and shortage of the space it is proposed to be built in museum fully in the Mathura ( vraja) style for this more space is needed to display the coins ,bronze, paintings and specimens of folk art.
