Surajkund Park, Meerut. It is clear from the name of Suraj Kund that it is related to the Sun. Earlier there used to be a huge lake named Surajkund. It is believed that during the Mahabharat period, the generous Maharaja Karna donated his armor and earrings to Devraj Indra here, when Indra was disguised as a Brahmin wearing saffron clothes. It is said that once Kunti came here for a visit with the royal family, she got absorbed in the glory of Suraj Kund. Seeing the rising Sun, she remembered the Sun God. The Sun God immediately appeared and blessed her to have a son. Later this son became famous by the name of Karna. The history of this pond has been changing for centuries. During the Ramayana period, when Mandodari saw the special features of Surajkund, she got it renovated and preserved. A Shivalinga was also established here. That small temple is still called Mandodari's temple. It is located near the Sati temple. Legend has it that during the war with Ravana, Agastya Muni had initiated Rama into the Aditya Hridya Stotra here. One of the specialties of Surya Kund is that on 22nd June, when the Sun sets in the south, it first appears in the northeastern corner of the pond and then slowly starts appearing towards the south. Suraj Kund was counted among the special lakes of India. The son of the first Guru of Sikhism, Shri Nanak Dev Ji and the founder of the Udasin sect, Shri Chand, had also visited Suraj Kund. A Gurudwara was established in 1937 at his resting place, which is still repeating the story of that time in a corner of the Suraj Kund park. The sounds of the recitation of Guruvaani resonate and overwhelm the visitors. During the British rule, Suraj Kund was a favorite place for the British to visit. Due to being in the forest area and secluded area, many small wild animals were found here in abundance, but there was a huge number of monkeys, so the British also called it Monkey Tank. The ancient Surajkund lake may have taken the form of Surajkund Park due to the water drying up over time, but this place is also a witness to the history of Meerut. Elders have been telling that fish used to swim in the lake here. Live Ramlilas were staged here. Boats used to run in the pond in which people used to take a ride. This pond was counted among the special holy ponds of India. During the freedom struggle, revolutionaries used to take refuge at this place to escape from the British forces. At that time, there were Peepal, Banyan, Semul, Kachnar, Mango trees which were centuries old. There were steps around the lake, on which people used to sit for hours and spend peaceful moments in the natural environment. Surajkund Park was built with the joint efforts of the Municipal Corporation and the Meerut Development Authority. In the middle of the park, on the birth centenary of Yug Purush Swami Vivekananda, his life size statue was installed on 12 January 2013, which seems to inspire people with the ideals of Swami Ji. At one end of the park, there is a historic temple from the time of the Marathas, where Maharana Pratap had stayed. In a small park in the west, there is a beautiful white marble statue of Gautam Buddha. Earlier, the population of the city was not so much, there was a forest around the park. The surrounding area was completely green. In front of it, there was Gandhi Ashram and Arya Samaj Mandir,Which is still there. Religious ceremonies of worship and prayers were held here under various rites. From Ramayana till today, people have been visiting this place. It is a convenient place for children to play, for elders to sit in a peaceful environment and for spending time with family. Various kinds of trees, plants and flowers have enhanced the beauty of this place. Read moreA Delightful Street Food Experience at Suraj Kund Park, Meerut
Today, I had the pleasure of indulging in some authentic street food at Suraj Kund Park in Meerut, where I sampled both Muradabadi Dal and Chole Kulche. Right from the first bite of the Chole Kulche, I was taken aback by its incredible flavor. The softness of the kulcha paired perfectly with the well-spiced chole, creating a delightful balance that instantly captured my taste buds. The taste was simply divine, and the freshness of the ingredients truly stood out.
Moving on to the Muradabadi Dal, I was equally impressed. The dal, accompanied by a generous serving of makhan (butter), was rich and creamy, making each spoonful a treat. The subtle flavors and less spicy profile made it enjoyable without overpowering the palate, a hallmark of good street food. The dish’s appearance was also tempting – beautifully presented and inviting, making me excited even before I tasted it.
The best part of the experience was the level of hygiene maintained by the vendor. Despite being a street food setup, the cleanliness was evident in the preparation and serving. Additionally, the humble and courteous nature of the stall owner enhanced the overall experience, making me feel welcomed and valued as a customer.
Overall, the food not only looked tempting but also tasted delicious, and the less spicy nature of both dishes made it an enjoyable experience for anyone. I highly recommend trying the Chole Kulche and Muradabadi Dal here if you’re ever in the area. It’s a street food experience that’s not...
